i just recently formatted my computer with XP. none of the ripping software works now. i tried force ASPI, and several different ASPI packs from Adaptec, none of those work.

the error message i get when i try to run smartripper is:

"No ASPI access to this drive, switch to winIO?" then it says "some files are still locked, try to unlock with player?"

I noticed as well in checkASPI that several of the files in there have different versions after i install them (adaptecs). i have read a LOT of complaints on here about the new adaptec ASPI layers. Are these crap? or am i a stupid n00b?

i have read conflicting reports about which ASPI layer i need, some say 4.60 works, some day it doesnt. i am really at a loss here, and dont want to have to reformat with winME. Can someone please please pretty please help me? i read all the posts i could find on this problem, but need some specific expert guidance-

sys specs
dell 4300 1.5gigz
windows xp (dont know if i have sp1 or not)
512 ram
pioneer ao4
smartripper 2.41

ok, that is all i can think of for now. i would certainly appreciate any advice anyone can give. if you had the same problem, please post your remedies =) =) =)

must...... rip...... again...

If you use DVD Decrypter you don't need the ASPI layer installed. Plus imho it is better than Smartripper.

Download ASPIv4.71.2 here. (http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=/Product/ASPI-4.70&filekey=aspi_471a2.exe)

Install to default location C:\adaptec\aspi

Then goto

"Start/Run" and type "cmd"

type the following:

cd\
cd adaptec\aspi
install.exe xp86

Reboot PC

Done!

Better hurry. Adaptecs servers can be a bit flaky sometimes.

The Edge,

I appreciate your help, and time - but your command line doesnt even make sense. not to mention, there is no install aspi.exe file in the rar.

can anyone else help?

OK, my mistake.

That should read:

cd\
cd adaptec\aspi
install.bat xp86

If you had of read the readme, we would not be having the conversation!
Good luck.

<desperation tone>i just wanted to recap my problem - to see if anyone else out there has some input</desperation tone>

When i try to use DVD Decryptor it says " cannot read from file vts_01_1.vob. Copy Protection error, the sector is encrypted"

When i try to run Smart ripper it says
"ASPI-Adapter Available
try to unlock drive...
no ASPI access to this drive
switch to winIO"

then it brings up a box that says, "some files are still locked, try to unlock with a player"

ok, so i assume this means i do not have the right ASPI layers installed.
I have read the readme and followed its intstrutions to the t.
However i still get the exact same error message even after installing the new ASPI layers. I tried 4.60 and 4.71 and 4.72.

When i do an ASPICHK , it says "ASPI is not properly installed, one or more of the components have been replaced by an older version"

that is all i can think of for now. If anyone else out there can lend some light on this subject, please help me-

thanks kindly to all in advance, and sincere thanks to the The Edge for trying to help, give it another shot dude if you want-

My CD-ROM drive works fine. My Pionneer A04 works fine, and burns CD-R and DVD-R data discs fine, i just cant rip anything.

I was doing the above last night from the top of my head.
Anyway, should have read install.bat xp32

Here a screen shot:

(Note: this was Winnt.....that's the reason for the errors)

Try that again anyway.

Second, play the DVD in you DVD player prior to opening DVD Decryptor.
That should unlock it the DVD.

well , learn something new everyday. the newest ver of dvddecrpter works without ASPI! how cool is that?

now i just have to figure out how to work the thing :)

can you split a movie in half with it, like in smartripper? send half of the chapters to one folder, then the other half to another folder?

installing powerdvd and starting the movie before U use SR may help

Yeah, my program (DVD Decrypter) can use SPTI when running under XP. It therefore doesnt need an ASPI driver installed in order to work.

Not only that, you dont need to play the disc in a player first for it to 'unlock' the disc. (All that stuff is a load of hocus pocus if its coded properly in the first place!)

If you want ASPI anyway, do what The Edge said.
Download ASPI v4.71.2 from www.adaptec.com.
Extract the contents of the zip to a folder and then from the command prompt (with that folder as the current dir), just type 'install xp32'
Pretty simple really, should take 1 minute.
Once that is done, just reboot the pc.
You'll then have a fully working ASPI layer.

I agree with that. Somewhere the program should mention open de dvd with a software player to unlock the dvd.:D
As I remember smartripper does. I thought. Well it's long ago since I used that program.
Dvddecerypter does not use an aspi driver. Aks the owner of the program.
Lightning Uk was a few seconds faster.
