I have been put in charge of recovering some files that were deleted from an NTFS WinXP machine. I short, I need recommendations for good software to use to recover the deleted files, be it free or pay (though free is much prefered, but im looking for the best).

I'm not sure, but I think a program called 'Encase' is what you need.

(never used it my self, though)

You could also try
easyrecovery professional,
although it is pretty expensive:

If you're looking for the best - I can recommend OnTrack Easy Recovery Pro - like thijs already mentioned.

I once had to recover a crashed 10 GB NTFS hard disk - with totally corrupted partion and FAT tables - other tools always told me they won't touch it - but Easy Recovery Pro was very successsful in RAW mode. Means it scanned the whole HD for known filetypes and nearly recovered all of them - only a very few were missing. It's expensive but worth every single cent if you want to have your data back. And it's pretty easy to use too - compared to other tools.
