i need to edit existing subtitles in an .vob file.
all editing programms i saw this far extract, but cannot insert them back in the vob-file again.
and all programms to edit subtitles with were not able to edit the extracted files.
ok. perhaps i am just dumb. (very likely ;) but if someone could give me a "subtitle-editing for dummies" i would be very happy.
a readeble/understandable textfile how .vob-files are encoded and work would also be fine.

Subtitles in a VOB are not text based, but bitmap-based. All rippers extract the bitmaps & then run some OCR process to retrieve the text. That text can of course be edited :) ... and then you can convert back to a format that can be muxed into vobs.
There are tools (on the software download page) to convert text subtitles to .sup. To add them to your vobs, demux your vobs first and then mux audio + video + .sup using ifoedit.
Alternatively, a set of bmps and a timed script can be muxed into an existing vob using submux-dvd (read about it here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45206&highlight=submuxdvd).

Years ago I've edited in Photoshop some of the extracted .BMP files, saved them in same format, and remuxed them with video/audio files - but no luck, the edited subs did not display. Then I took the file head of a original .BMP and replaced it the head of all edited .BMPs - It worked fine!
So if you want to only change a few subs(text, not color), take my way.
