Well I've got a codec which is *twice* as good as VP6!

But I won't let anyone use it unless they send me a sack full of cash :p

Don't tell me you were/are the one selling Luxiorisity video on Ebay, lol

Are you planning to sell the Xvid codec on Ebay under the name 'Luxuriousity Codec'?

@sirebender
thing is, on2 does not release (free) test versions of their VP4/5/6. Not even with a limit or logo on the output. And as long as people can't test a codec i guess it won't be interesting to the big part of the community here.
They can always claim how good they are, as long as i can't test it it's no use for me :P

Well ... I've got one better then yours, I've even placed a screen-shot on my fancy web site :D

The only codec we can try from on2 is VP3, and DIVX 4 is better than VP3...

well vp5 streams in winamp looks (quite) good, and vp6 should be even better

Ahhh.. but have you got a comparison of *your codec* vs *a very, very badly encoded xvid clip* :D

Sirber

What do you mean by that?

well iirc, in the past on2 have used comparisons on their website of vp4 and vp5 vs divx, xvid, etc.

however the quality of the mpeg4 clips has always been dubious (i.e encoded in a way which dosen't do their respective codecs justice)

(a bit like microsoft with their wma vs mp3 comparisons)

Ok :)

Thanks for the explanation :D

RV9 isn't included. Is it because RV9 is kicking VP6's ass?

maybe I'm beeing too rude here  but in my opinion RV9 isnt included because on2 was too lazy, they just copied the comparison document of VP5 and changed a couple of notes. RV9 wasnt included in the VP4/5 comparison doc so it dosnt appear in VP6 as well. But this is jusy my theory and based on a guess and the amazing similarity to the VP5 comparison document :p

Is few days, will we forget all about the new VP6 codec? Whitout being able to test it, it will be an abandonware or forgotenware. :)

Only believe the clips you've manipulated yourself to make the codec you like look best  I shall base my opinion on my own tests if I ever get my hands on the encoder software (I rate the chances of this happening in the one digit percentile area).

Yes, I had already done so until this thread got bumped. ;)

But it might become a different story if we started hearing about anyone we trust actually being able to use the darn thing.

ummm.. did anyone else actually look at their vp6 samples? is it just me, or does vp6 seem WORSE than vp5 (based on the samples)? In fact, I think I saw some instances when their bogus wmv9 clips even outperformed their own vp6 clips...

No, it's not just you. ;)

IMO VP6 looks worse than VP5. I watched their X-Men Trailer and even though it is very dark you can clearly see the lack of detail in some scenes. In scenes you wouldn't expect this to happen with current MPEG4 codecs at the same bitrate. Whatever they changed in their codec it was a bad move.

BTW: does anyone know if VP3/4/5/6 is based on any standard like MPEG or if it's more or less their own thing?

go to the samples page linked above in this thread. Download that football clip, and you will see how crappy it looks. Pixels EVERYWHERE, and the image doesn't even look that sharp. I am wondering if this is an intentional move.

Their codecs (at least vp4 and vp5, and I would assume vp6 as well) are based on the MPEG-4 standard.

If that's true, WMV9 could be better than VP6?

Sure, but anyway it seems to me a battle for the less worst. :D

nah, IMO, wmv9 is the best codec around right now. Contrary to doom9's codec comparison, I think that wmv9 offers as many details (if not more details) than XviD. Even in the screenshots in the comparison, I thought that, generally speaking, the wmv9 screenshots looked way more detailed than was given credit for. wmv9 beats XviD at lower bitrate video (in the 600 kbps range), and can do better at high bitrate video as well. If you are good at tweaking the XviD settings for "perfect" results, then you might get better results, eventually. But for good, consistent, quality rips, I like wmv9. rv9 is another good codec, except right now it has too many issues for me to use it (still some jitter problems with the renderer and excessive, uncontrollable post-processing).

OKAY, done ranting.

Yes, in my experience wm9 gives generally better quality than xvid, but at what cost? I'm able to encode xvid's higher than realtime (30+fps, usually pal material), where wm9 encodes at whoppingly 2-3fps. So would I like to wait 10x the time to get marginally better results? No.
