Hi, i'm looking for some "official" (or kinda of..) subtitles format specifications for the formats :
.SRT , .SUB , .SMI , .SUP

Do you know any link or some place i could find good informations about them (i need the specs for implementing import/export to these formats from my newer application)

Many Thanks

arrrgh this first link is
a) useless because this guy doesn't even say a word about allowed tagging (call that spec?)
b) irritating, cos for .srt it has the numbering on the same line as the timecodes, SubRip does it different (one line number, next timecodes) and i tho subRip was /the/ .srt app (how does it SubRipper ?) what is correct now ? both ?
c) upsets me : "4. SubStationAlpha (*.ssa) allmost not in use" WHAT?

sorry if i was a bit rude but this page is sure NOT what i want to see when i return home and see a link to "subtitle specifications" :(

..maybe i should add someting constructive

hmm kaiousama ..what about JACO sub format ? i think it's rather old, but is it still used (ie lots of old subs still in this format ?..say is it worth adding support for it ?)
specs -> http://unicorn.us.com/jacosub/jscripts.html

microsoft sami
(sami and smil both use the extension .smi , im not sure which you meant)

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnacc/html/atg_samiarticle.asp

(supershort intro here http://www.sami.antonz.org.ua/readme.html :)

smil 2.0

smil 1.0
http://www.w3.org/TR/1998/REC-smil-19980615/
http://life.csu.edu.au/itc332/module9/topic9-2-99.html
slightly OT but maybe still interesting for SMIL http://oratrix.com/DocSet/Content/Reference/R13-QuickRef.html

^^read the w3c spec? ..and after that you still want to import SMIL ?

you wanted it official, there you get more official than one can digest :)

as for .srt it seems like SubRip is really the application that defined them, and it seems to come w/o specs, so there is sort of "what goes with SubRip is .srt" as only spec.
from my experience it has the x1: y1: x2: y2: in the timecode line and only <font color="#..."> and <i> ..<b> and <u> tags seem not supported by subrip therefore probably not allowed in the format ..but as said only from experience..

Many thanks Unmei for the links, very useful.

about Jacosub, yes... i think i've understimated its diffusion, in these days i've travelled around anime subtitles' sites and this format is very very used (sometimes, mainly for old series, it is the only format you can find subtitles). I think i have to add support for this format into my application.

About smil/smil2 .... i've read the specifications and seems very flexible, but from what i've seen it's almost not used, i can't explain myself why.

I have great expectations from USF, but actually i prefer to wait until more animation support to be added, after that i'll plain about a platform changing.

about html/xml like formats (smil,rt,usf etc..) i would like to add support in my Medusa but actually i've written a parser that's optimal for line based subtitles but is totally unuseful for html/xml based subtitles, so to add support for these formats i've to write an additive parser. Actually i prefer concentrating myself on developing and adding the rest of basic features, after that i'll seriously take in consideration about writing a new parser.

What about you, which subtitles' formats do you plan to add support in U96?
