View Full Version : XMpeg 5.0 and Mpeg Codec

Hi There.
Been a long time user of Xmpeg v4.31 (The most stable version i could find) for decoding any VOBs to AVIs. I crave quality so i would always use the MJPEG codec set at 20 (100% quality), despite the 30GB .AVIs i would get. I would usually use these as a base to encode to VCD later....but that's not the issue right now.
I recently noticed Version 5 flying around with many new Beta and RC's already out, so i thought i would give it a go. Problem is and i can't find any info in the forums here or there (at their official site) and wanted to know it is just me, or have they remove all .AVI support except for DIVX formats? as this is the only codec it allows me to select is the DIVX 5.0.3 and two microsoft Divx Codecs.
Is this a deliberate mopve by them, do they think we only want to use DivX formats? Or is there something that can be done to let Xmpeg know we have more Codecs installed and wish to use them.
Any help appreciated...and expected ;)

ExtraBit,
This is not the appropriate forum for your post, but here my observations:
1. If you want quality in your AVIs, you should try a lossless codec like HuffYUV. It would even use less space than MJPEG at q=20!!!
2. Just because of curiosity I downloaded and installed Xmpeg 5.0 RC1. It is able to encode directly to MPEG1/VCD, and if encoding to AVI it lets you choose any codec, including HuffYUV, DivX, MJPEG...
Hope that helps, :J

you seem to have a great mix of codecs installed. try deinstalling all of them and then just reinstalling one after another, only the ones you need. if you do not encode to divX, you might just want to install ffdshow, if you want to encode to divx, just install divx 5.05 or 03, if you want.
anyway, for doing (S)VCD you might give the program DVD2SVCD a try. it will do almost all the work for you and i wouldn't be surprised if you ended up with better results!
and if you want to make divx/xvid avis, consider giving gordianknot a try. for both of them there's detailed guides on www.doom9.org
oh and JuanC is right, this is not the appropriate forum for this (:

Hi Guys. Thanks for the replies. In Answer to your questions.
This forum DOES seem to be about decrypting. Which XMPEG does, current issue, i can't use XMPEG the NEW XMPEG to decrypt.
I do use all these codecs. I don't use them all for encoding, but i need DivX to VIEW movies i have downloaded from the net.
Yes i have used Huffy as well, but i found on my Home DVD/TV Setup, that MJPEG gives me more realistic colour and i'm happy to stay with that, but that isn't the issue i'm asking about.
So i won't be uninstalling my codecs as i have only the ones i use now, which is the 2 DivX formats & MJPEG, INDEO (Some games use it).
Did you need to do anything special to get the use of the other AVI Codecs?
P.S. If i install v4.31, all my codecs become available again.

Decrypting is the process that brings the vob files to your Hard drive, if you had encrypted files on your HD you would be pretty much screwed anyway. you cannot use currently use Xmpeg to decode!
but i need DivX to VIEW movies i have downloaded from the net a lot of mods would strike you for this. Please re-read the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm), especially rule 6 (!)
with your above post you just prooved that you didn't even read my previous post, not even to speak about reading FAQs etc...

Well this seems to be slipping off topic, but i would like to say that i have read through your Forums rules twice and since you have picked out the line about DIVX and Movies downloaded from the net you must seem to think i'm talking about pirated films? I'm afraid that view of yours is completely incorrect.
I'm actually a big time online gamer I play in a Battlefield 1942 clan here in Australia and there are Gigs of films made by myself and other enthuists using the Battlefield Engine (www.plantbattlefield.com), much like Counterstrike movies and the such. Many of these come down in many different formats, from straight MPEG, to DivX and even more recently Xvid. Of course i could be wrong, but if i'm not, you haven't shown too much tolerance towards me and i thank you for nothing. If i am incorrect and i've broken another rule which i'm just not seeing, i apoliguise, feel free to use a private message/email to point me in the right direction. I don't want to make mistakes and i'm not looking for a fight.
And lastly, the description of this forum says..and i quote
How do I get the files on my DVD to my harddisk?
My problem is using the new XMPEG to save FILES from DVD (and at times other sources like DIVX) to Hardrdive using an AVI format of my choice. I believe that fits perfectly into the description.
I'm not a large poster in this community but i have used the search function to find answers to my problems, but you have certainly encouraged me to keep my mouth shut and search elsewhere.

Files = VOBs, IFOs etc.
They're encrypted on DVDs (CSS) in order to prevent extracting them, so decrypting = the difficult part of extracting.
AVIs mean using a codec different from MPEG2, thus = encoding.
Clear enough?
Mind your tone AND the content (ambiguous) of your posts, please!!
XMPEG is not dead and decrypts DVD. Nevertheless, new DVDs like Harry Potter seems to have a more complicated authentification system. You're sometime obliged to use a DVD Player to access to DVD content :'-(.
More than that, no reliable source code is available to replace the auth.dll used in most of free tool to authorize the DVD. If anyone have information about this, let me know.

You cannot use XMPEG is not a ripper, but you do not need to store them on the hard drive. You can directly decode them, and reencode them in the format you want...
