Hi,
it is highly recommended to capture video AND audio lossless, means video huffyuv or nearly lossless an mjpeg codec and audio uncompressed.
Compressing audio realtime to mp3 ? I think it doesnt work. I think I tried it some time ago with the same result.
Which program did you use ? VDub ?

Hi Baronvlad.
I have interest in realtime capture and compress audio to MP3 only when I have no time to make 2pass and I intend to discard the movie after seeing it. I don't like to capture directly in VCD, because the results is too bad.
If it doesn't work, I'll capture in PCM and after that compress it.
BTW, have you seen my comment about 1-pass quality based in Capture Guide Suggestions part 2 ? I'm try to use this kind of capture, but using MP3 instead PCM.
I'm using IUvcr.

Alexandre

Hi,
yes I saw your comments, seems to be something similar to avihs idea as mentioned in the guide. Here is the link (it starts with an old version of our capture FAQ, please scroll down to read avihs thoughts): http://virtualdub.everwicked.com/index.php?act=ST&f=6&t=35&
BTW: If you discard the capture after watching it once, does it really matter, whether the sound is mp3 or PCM ? PCM is not that huge ;)

@ADLANCAS:
Don't feel bad; my computer crashes outright if I try to capture MP3 in real time. ADPCM works, though, and compresses about 4:1.
yes, it's hard to compress to mp3 in RT. it crash (win98SE) or just doesn't work (XP-Pro) at least for me, and i've tried many mp3 acm codecs. adpcm, is working but gives relatively high bitrate, it's more or less like hufyuv (lossless). i've done a long research about RT audio compressors, untill now, my findings are that if you can afford QDesigm mpeg2 acm codec, it will compress to mpeg2 audio in RT quite well. that's the best i've found to date for real time audio compression with a standard format. and it also plays out of the box on machines without this codec installed, even win98SE.
gsm should also work in RT, but it's only mono and quite a low bitrate, but it IS working. iirc, NCT-ALF2 is also working in RT, but it's minimum bitrate is 256kbps and it's a non standard (although free and open) compression, meaning that without the codec installed, it won't play on other computers, but should be ok if u only intend to watch your clip on your PC. very good quality. get it from http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/NCT_ALF2/
the best solution would be vorbis, since it's popular, standard and open format, but i couldn't cap in RT with vorbis, not even with CBR. it just won't work. BUT since it's been some time since my experiments with RT audio compression, there might be better vorbis acm around that will allow for cbr capture.

Possible or not - I want to save my cpu power for the video, cause I dont like drops that much :D
