View Full Version : T2 Extreme 'Hi Def' media won't play!
ooops!

What a penal wart!
Just received my special import copy of Terminator 2 'Extreme DVD' (with high def WM9 content). Placed the disc in the old PC and after some pushing of many buttons later I was informed that 'only people in the US and Canada are allowed to view the contents of this disc'.
Now 'dat makes me ve'we ang'we' as Arnie might say!
And before more of you decide to purchase this disc for your own enjoyment. Just have a quick look at the 'recommended system requirements': -
Windows XP Professional (No XPHome then)
Windows Media Player 9 Series
InterActual Player
512MB of RAM
3 Ghz Processor (yep you are reading this correctly)
128MB/3D Video Card
24Bit 96kHz Multichannel Sound Card
Mouse, Speakers/Headphones
Internet connection of at least 56.6Kbps (that's generous of them)
Recommended Display: 1600x1200, 1920x1080, or higher display setting
So it's time to break out your wallets, raid your piggy banks or marry that ugly rich girlfriend or boyfriend that keeps pestering you.
I really can't decide which option to go for!
I need advice and I need it quick or 'I'll be back' !

Mouse, Speakers/Headphones Dangit! When are companies going to stop requiring a mouse for every little thing?
Everyone without a mouse, boycott the DVD!! [/sarcasm]

Very nice, so this is what I must go through in order to be able to watch this DRM protected clip...:rolleyes:
Disc #1 of this set is a region 1 disc (Canada and the US). The second disc (disc #2) containing the HD Windows Media content will use the user’s IP address to determine his/her location and only issue a license to people who reside in the US or Canada. Currently, the content owner has decided to issue a 5 day timeout license. After the 5 days is up, when the user plays the content a license is automatically renewed as long as disc #2 is in the drive.
The T2 DVD requires the user to have the Interactual player (which hosts the Windows Media Player 9 Series ocx) in the drive before a license will be issued. A user may take disc #2 from one PC to another PC (e.g. home network scenario), but the license will only be issued to PC’s that have disc #2 in the drive.
Please note the minimum CPU requirements and graphics card requirements on the box. Due to the high resolution of the content this DVD will work best on a PC with a 3GHz processor with a 128MB/3D video card. To get a surround sound experience Windows XP (Pro or Home), a 5.1 capable sound card and Windows Media Player 9 Series are required.
There is more, apparently instead of one big WMV file there is a whole bunch of 6! -1gig each WMVs so when the Mplayer needs to load one of those files the playback is paused for about 6 seconds! Chaptering isn't supported nor the fast forwarding, also internet connection required every 5 days for license renewal so forget about playing it on your HTPC. (Unless it's wired of course)
In other words its looks like M$ has put a lot of effort into making the whole experience as less enjoyable as possible. Way to Go!:devil:

Thanks for all the comments and feedbacks.
First of all, with regard to the CPU requirement, although we recommend 3Ghz, we have tested on various machines and verified that it can play smoothly on P4 2.4Ghz machines with a reasonable video card. And in fact, I was playing this back on a Centrino 1.6Ghz laptop the other day, and it played very smoothly. It rarely dropped one frame (during the high-action scenes).
There is no doubt that there are things that we need to improve. This is really one of the very first trials for us, and we really learned a lot from the whole process. But I do hope that you all enjoy the high-quality HD video (letterbox 1080p!) and multi-channel audio. At the end of the day, quality matters the most to me:)
Thanks,
Ming

@Ramirez
I can play fluently clips up to 1280x688 of XviD video + ogg Vorbis at my old good Athlon 900. But with your monstrosity it would be really hard. Even if I have lived in US,Canada area. But I don't have any chance to try it. Anyway I wouldn't threaten poeple. They don't like it. Really, trust me. Anyway it was nice party. :D

Messing with me is the last thing you wanna do, trust me on this one.
I'd almost challenge you on that, with such a ridiculous threat.

@mf
You didn't like the "tone" used aren't you? its sounds like am a mighty moderator banning/striking people all over the place :D, believe me I wouldn't like it either if I'd seen somebody posting some similar crap here (I was really in rage when I wrote it, /silly remark removed /) but, in any event am not deserves to get such as extremely offensive replay as Lobuz has left for me here.
@Lobuz
I followed the link provided by Vladdy and being under heavy impression of thing posted there I've decided to write a short summary,so I did, now imagine my surprise when I've seen this strange message>."Too much Vodka", why??? What's exactly makes my post so incredibly stupid? Have I invented anything? Have I bended the truth? I have nothing against constructive critics but calling your replay constructive..

It's not suprising that someone called you on it.

Makes me wonder what the mean age of this forum is.. Is there really any point in chucking a tanty over someone's (sic) comments.. No use getting upset over a few choice words.. personally, i found it amusing and even if someone said that to me, I'd still find it funny.
I'm still waiting for oops's comments about the encode....

Well actually I was going to laugh, but your post was so serious it got me into a "bring it on"-state. Anyway, nice you edited it. However, (I might be terribly wrong), it looks to me like there is a misunderstanding. If you put these quotes under eachother:

It seems they relate. Maybe he had too much wodka to reply intelligently :D. But that's just speculation. Still, it looks like a joking tone, so I wouldn't take it so offensively.

Well, I do enjoy a good slanging match. It's just a shame it would have to happen on one of my threads!
And I do hope the two of you can kiss and make up. Why not send each other some whale music or, I know, the sound you hear from a womb. That's supposed to be very relaxing!
Anyway, back to the tread. I've still not managed to play the bloody thing. But it would seem the first thing I've got to do is:-
Set the WinMedia 9 series player to region1 (not a problem as I have a region free DVD drive) and like most people I never use the WinMedia player to view DVD's.
Follow 'Li oN's' proxy server proceedure etc.
Now, I have to ask would it be better to drag the files off the DVD and onto my hard drive? Would this then negate the need to reset the WinMedia 9 series player to region1 as there would be no region coding data within the WMV files. Or have I missed something here?
That's why the call me Ooops!

LOL! "E tu, brute!" :D,but seriously you've got it all wrong, there is no rant there, this is SARCASM we're talking about, and yes, quite a bit of it went into my post since this is the only way I know how to describe my filings in regards to these ridicules piracy prevention measures implemented by M$.
It's not suprising that someone called you on it.
Well,last time I've checked there was 38000 registered users of D9 forums, so there's always will be "someone" who might consider my statements as ridicules,Still I'm less then willing to change anything in my posting just because of that.
@mf
Well spoken! :) The whole mess could have easily avoided if he'd been clearer in his statements (or polite).:rolleyes:
@ooops
Don't feel bad, you can always open a million WMV9 related treads, I'll participate in each and every one of them, I promise.:D
@all
I'm really tired of this mess,please,let's stop it right here.
