View Full Version : long file size for average quality while using DivX 5.05

Hi all,

At the time I was using GKnot 26 and DivX 5.02, everything was fine.
Since I aim at a quite good quality for my encoded movies, I very often go for 2 CDs, with compression test results around 100%.
Of course, I happened to have AVI files smaller than the size I requested, because of that.

However, since I upgraded to GKnot 0.28 final (not the latest), and DivX 5.05, I could always fill completely my 2 CDs while the quality did not look so good. Yet, as I said, my settings always aim for quite good quality.

I've done many tests, with 2 passes, 3 passes, one CD, two CDs for the same movie, and results did not satisfy me anymore.

So, I gave a try with the latest XviD developer build, and I got a file size of a bit more of 900 MB, with a better quality than what I could obtain with DivX 5.05. Same resolution, same resizing filter, same movie!

My conclusion: either XviD became much better than DivX, either I have a problem with my DivX codec.

For those who want to know: what I said above is teh result of a pediod of test of DivX 5.05 based on about 12 encoding sessions (3 per movie, 4 movies).
The second test on XviD, based on a second movie, is currently running, and I'm confident I'll get as good results as with the first one :-)

Anyone experienced the same?
Do you already have an idea at what the reason could be without having to look at log files? If not, I'll post some.
Thanks!

have u made sure that the codec Divx 5.05 is set to encode in SLOWEST mode and not any other this makes a massive difference

and i would strongly reccomend to upgrade to .28.2 beta 2 there are a lot of bug fixes and new features since then

as for quality i find divx 5.05 in original pass mode much much better than multipass and a lot better with phycoacoustics on normal or light b frames etc

i find it better than 5.02 by a long way

Thanks for your suggestion.

Slowest was already selected, along with all the usual advised by Doom settings, like B frames and GMS (no Q pel).

But I don't use the original pass mode, indeed. It may be the reason!
I may give it a try, next time that I will give DivX 5 another chance. For now, I was very happy with the XviD results, and would like to go along with it :-)

But thanks again, because I really like to know what could be wrong, anyway!
