View Full Version : RV9 encoding speed ?

Hi everybody,
Does that happen to you too or only to me? i really like the RV9 , but the problem is that i wait too long to encode a whole movie. for 2h movie i need 10 hours for 2 pass encoding. with DivX i need the half of that time - 5h. so i was wondering if my settings are wrong or the RV9 codec is a "lil" slow. i use the latest Milestone of the RV9.
i appreciate any information, tipps & suggestion. thanks

A 2-hour show only takes me like 6 hours with Helix Producer Pro (the GUI). Something is wrong with how you're encoding.
Are you converting to RGB or using extra filters on your RV9 encodes? Are you using the Helix CLI by it self or are you using a GUI like (RMFactory)?

well it doesn't matter what i use. it is still 10h. but there is something else. maybe your computer is faster than mine. i have PIII M 1Ghz notebook with 256 MB & 20GB HDD.

My computer isn't that much faster. It is a 1.4 ghz athlon xp 256 meg ram.

i think it's quite linear : a 2ghz cpu will do the job about twice faster than a 1ghz one.i also consider that rv9 encoding is twice longer than divx encoding with the same avisynth script .
see you...

OK, now i get it. so it's normal if the RV9 encoding is longer than the DivX. that's not very happy news, but oh well! what can i do? just wait longer! :(

It should be noted also that most laptop harddrives are much slower than desktop harddrives. 4200rpm for laptop harddrives as opposed to 5400/7200rpm for normal IDE Desktop harddrives..

Whatever you do, just don't do it on your notebook
they usually aren't build for such a system stressing process as encoding.(10 hours! LOL:D )
Bad idea, you're literally killing your laptop.

Maybe it's a Super Laptop from the army with a low-heat quantum processor :D

I have exactly the same config of laptop as you. However my encoding speed is not as slow as yours.
May i ask did you actually wait for the 10 hours or was it a estimate from the encoder??
And what setting did you use and what is the sources you are using?

I am afraid RV9 is as fast as it can be without sacrificing quality. Everything is highly assembly and MMX/SSE/SSE2 optimized, and multi-threaded, it just has to do many more calculations. and in the upcoming EHQ mode, it has to do even more... thus really making good use of those latest P4 and AMD processors.
In RV9 default mode, I have about real-time encoding on a 2.4GHz P4. A PIII does not have SSE2, which we use quite a bit, so in addition to the difference in clock speed, there will be about 20% performance hit for not having SSE2. Based on this, let's do a quick calculation:
24 fps on a P4 2.4 GHz:
24 / (2.4/1.0) = 10 fps
Then, subtract 20% for lack of SSE2: 8 fps
So, at 8 fps, a 2 hour two pass encode will take around
2 hr * (24/8) * 2 passes = 12 hours, or 10 hours for a shorter movie Sorry, but at least my calculations match your experience pretty well

Yep, RV9 is slow but it's not as slow as WME9 or WMV9. So stop your moaning! Ha Ha!

RV9 is by no means a slow poke, but its not the fastest either.

In anamorphic mode, RV9 is faster and provide better quality.

Just completed some encoding speed tests, using my std 137min test file as a source. Here are the results:
DivX5: 1st Pass: 02h 41m 18s / 2nd Pass: 02h 26m 03s
RMV9: 1st Pass: 03h 45m 30s / 2nd Pass: 04h 15m 17s
WME9: 1st Pass: 05h ??m ??s / 2nd Pass: 12h 13m 04s
WMV9: 1st Pass: 05h 14m 06s / 2nd Pass: 23h 45m 13s
What was that about RMV9 being sssslllloooowwww!

If you're looking to sling mud, count me out.
You're data only supports my statement, though. RV9 is by no means a slow encoder, like WME/WMV, but its not the fastest either it takes aprox 2.5 hours longer than Divx. I was compairing to Xvid too, not Divx.
