I need to play an XviD avi with Quicktime. I have Quicktime 6.1 (the latest version for Windows?) and it doesn't play the file.
Thanks
You cant play an xvid avi in quicktime. Best bet, is to make the file into a mp4 using mp4creator from mpeg4ip and then try and play it. But even then, it might not work.

ps
Quicktime does not use the AVI API so it can only play codecs it directly has support for.

I tried that once, and I can say, that it won't work. Quicktimes support for MPEG4 is very basic.

Quicktime only support a subset of MPEG4-(advanced) simple profile and has different limitations than these standard definitions. They have some strange "level 0" of anything (up to level 3) thingy going - so you won't be able decode an xvid with bframes, qpel, >320x288,.... and so on.

I don't want to sound rude or anything,
but if DavidStep is trying to play an Xvid avi in Quicktime, then he probably won't understand the technical explanation given by Nic or Koepi.
Then again, if he is a newbie[only has one post so far], I am wondering how he knows that the avi is encoded with Xvid.
This is purely my subjective speculation, but recently this forum has been flooded with people with 1 post asking silly/weird questions.
The only explanations that comes to mind is:
- he genuinely doesn't know
- someone is making a new account each time so that they can ask weird/silly questions
- someone has nothing better to do but waste developers time
If you genuinely don't know, then I apologise. It just appears very very fishy to me.
Logically, if you try playing it in Quicktime and it doesn't work, then try playing it with another player. I don't think you need a high IQ to work this out.
If it's someone constantly re-registering, it's easy to find out; this forum tracks IPs. Of course, with dynamic IPs it becomes harder, but still tracable.
@kastro:
I know what you mean...Sometimes I also think it sounds like people working for companies that want to use the software in a GPL breaking way...but thats probably me being paranoid. ;)
Some people do appear to need the answer to a question and are willing to wait the 5 days rather than find out them selves. Still I dont mind answering questions like this. It hopefully means they wont be asked again.

Personally, i didn't knew that QT was not able to play an xvid avi, but i wouldn't have the idea to use such a player for playbacking my encodes so far :D

I'm probably being paranoid too. I'm sure there is a logical explanation.
It may well be that someone has been promoting Xvid and marketing it in a very effective way, which would explain the influx of people interested in Xvid...which is a good thing.
I've been promoting Xvid too and trying to convince people that it is better than divX.
Maybe some of that paid off :)

Just for the fact that one needs to wait 5 days to start posting in here after registering, i think it's very farfetched that anyone is doing this on purpose... either way it seems to me that there are still lots of people that don't undestand the diferences between a container and a codec ..
I wonder if it would be a good idea to spam a user with recommended links and tutorials during the first five days ... :D

I think vB supports welcome PMs, yes ;).

Back to topic. :)
I'm not aware of any way to play MPEG-4 AVIs directly in the Windows version of QT. However there's a plugin for the Mac version of QT at http://aldorandenet.free.fr/codecs/. Maybe the source also compiles under Windows, but I wouldn't count on it.

Just install 3ivx (www.3ivx.com). It comes with a a frontend for Quicktime, VfW and DirectShow ...
