Running under SPTI.
Does this work as effectively as running under SCSI/ATAPI?
Thanks

Sounds like you're a little confused. SPTI and SCSI/ATAPI are two totally different things.
SPTI is a method of communicating with your drives - as is ASPI, ASAPI and ElbyCDIO.
SCSI/ATAPI are the physical interface types/names of the drives themselves. You have heard of SCSI before havent you? And ATAPI is just a more generic term for non SCSI cd/dvdrom drives that covers usb, firewire, IDE etc. Well, roughly anyway ;-)
If SPTI works for you, leave it on it. You wont need any 3rd party drivers that way.
I use SPTI all the time.
