View Full Version : How to do a perfect rip?

Hi folks,

before bashing me in my n00b ignorance let me tell you that I searched the forum, but didn't find what I wanted to know.

I read about some YV12 process chain and the tools needed for it.
So, what do I need and which steps do I have to perform to make a perfectly looking XViD DVD rip?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers

If you want to do some good encode with latest tools, you just have to check the YV12 faq in the avisynth forum ant the stickies in this one ( have u seen the document in "newbie settings" thread ? )

U can also have a look at this thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52422 where koepi explain the most used avisynth tweaks & filters

Hi,

thanks for your answer. I read some of the stuff in the avisynth board and it doesn't really make sense for me.

I still don't understand what to do first, then second and so on...

I assume I have to rip the DVD files onto the disk first?

But what comes next?

Can someone give me some explanation like this:

1. rip dvd with program XY
2. start program XY and do blablabla

That yould be perfect!

Thanks in advance!

what about reading the guides on the doom9 main side?

if you want xvid settings read the "Newbie" settings thread!

if you want to know even more (which isnt really necessary) use the search function...

@SomeOfAllFears

If you do a search and you get an overwhelming number of results, try searching thread titles only rather then whole posts. You will often find what you are looking for when you do this.

As for how to rip, take a look at the XviD newbies thread at the top of this forum. In there you will find a link to snowbeach's XviD encoding guide.

Read doom9's guide (http://www.doom9.org/xvid-guides.htm), it use robot4rip wich automate all the ripping/demuxing/audio encoding process then it use GodianKnot for filesize calculation/cropping/avisynth script creation.

Then configure the codec with the document in the newbie settings thread.

I think it's the best way to start, the next step will be to "customize" your avisynth scripts with filters that will help you to gain compressibility/get rid of noise/...

Wow, thank you all. I think I have now the basic idea of ripping and encoding with those tools.

I did a small test run with an 1:43 min PAL video from DVD and it took about 45 minutes to complete (700 MHz Athlon)!!!

This can't be normal!?!

Any suggestions?

P.S. I followed the great Koepi XviD Encoder guide step by step.

Thanks

i think this is normal! i have a 900 MHz Athlon and I need for the recommended settings (see guide link at my sig) for a movie like Gladiator (~2h30) about 24h. Use VHQ 1 and check how long it lasts. It should be better than, probably regarding time. save your first encoded file. run a test with vhq 1. stop your time and compare the results afterwards( also qualitywise).

Thanks, I will try that.
