View Full Version : FFDShow makes all XVid AVIs green.

Hi,

Any idea how I can fix this problem? I had Nic's March 30th, 2003 XVid codec and DivX 5.02 installed. I decided to give FFDShow a try. I installed it and it came up with two menu options. Configure and Uninstall. Configure did not bring up a dialog box like some people imply it should.

Instead, I installed Zoomplayer which has a Filter Configuration option. In that dialog box, I selected FFDShow and clicked on the Register button. It said FFDShow successfully registered. Then I was able to get to the FFDShow configuration dialog box, but again, only going through Zoomplayer. I made sure all 3 versions of DivX were selected, as well as XVid.

During playback using any player, all XVid AVIs are solid green. All DivX Avis work just fine. I went back into FFDShow config (again through the Zoomplayer menu options) and deselected XVid from the list of Codecs that the FFDShow filter should replace. All Xvids are now normal again.

Any ideas how to enable Xvid playback with FFDShow so that it is not a green screen? I have already tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Xvid codec, FFDShow and Zoomplayer. Same results every time. Xvid is always green as long as it is selected in FFDShow config.

Thanks,
Rooster

The only aid I can give you is that you should check the use xvid.dll for xvid movies. Anyway your problem is really strange. Maybe more data helps (ie: computer description, operating system, ffdshow version, ...)

Install the latest alpha release. It should solve your problem. ;)

I think 19/04/2002 is quite old for FFDshow. I'm not sure it can handle properly GMC, Qpel in Xvid (and maybe B-frames).
I'll suggest to upgrade to latest version on FFDshow Alpha (24/04/2003)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow
I personnally never use FFDshow for Xvid, Nic's stand alone decoder or the basic decoder included with Koepi's builds works just fine for me.

You are right, my codec was quite old. In fact, I had installed the latest April 24th alpha build, but only in a programs directory. I have just realized that I had a previous version of ffdshow.ax installed in the winxp/system32 folder which was obviously taking precedence. Although the installation routine did not detect a previous version, I should have checked for one myself. I copied the more current files from the program folder into winxp/system32 and I no longer get the green screen. As well, I can get to the configuration page directly from the Start menu, which I could not do before.

Since I have never previously deliberately installed ffdshow before, I have to assume it was installed when I was playing around with some codec packs a while ago (Nimo and Tsunami). Serves me right, only install what you need!!

Thanks for the suggestions. Live and learn.....

Adding to my assertion that codec packs are EVIL.

Taken form XviD FAQ, question 16.

You installed the Nimo pack? The Nimo Codec Pack is evil[tm]!
