Newb DV Question

I've hooked up my new Canon MV500i (PAL) Camcorder to the computer via Firewire.

When captured to AVI using Premiere 6.0 and Vegas 4.0 but both display a very jerky/choppy picture when played back in WMP9 or PowerDVD. Audio seems fine.

When captured to mpg using Arcsoft Showbiz I dont get the stuttering picture.

When captured to AVI with Windows Movie Maker, it doesnt stutter but lines are through moving objects (looks similar to an interlaced picture). WMV is fine but low quality.

Any ideas why this is happening ? Its almost like its dropping a shitload of frames, but this isnt happening. (I have a 2ghz Athlon/512mb DDR/160gb HD) and not a single frame dropped

I'm not very goo in this matter, but it sounds like if interleaved frames has been incorrectly captured. Try to capture specifying another filed order in the options of Premiere (i don't know where you can specify that...)

Do you try to play back the DV AVI in WMP9 or PowerDVD? If yes, you may notice jerkiness because of high CPU load. Try another player like WMP 6.4 (which resides on your HDD, too).

If you have converted your video to MPEG-2 and experience jerkiness, you might have chosen the wrong field order while encoding. Try ReStream to correct the field order flag (DV is bottom field first).
