Because idx+sub is a graphical based format, and srt is a text format...
It's as easy as this...
And to convert one to the other, you have to do a process called OCR (optical character recognition)...
Just think of the idx+sub file as an image you scanned with text in it...
You only have to enter each character once, the software will remember it...
Shouldn't take you much more then 10 minutes...
Better check the spelling in word or something afterwards, there are usually some errors, but they can easily be corrected...
Note that ctrl+h is very handy in word in this case (search and destroy, err, replace...)

You may want to try Subrip. It performs the same action as subresync, but is IMO much better at correcting errors that come up in the conversion.

You have a guide at http://www.doom9.org/subtitle_guide.htm, but it's quite outdated (the GUI has changed a bit among other things) and a large part of everything in there is irrelevant. Still, if you browse down a bit and only check the part about Subrip it should help you.

It is quite normal that you have to put in the same character a couple of times. It works on pixels and if the character is off by a number of pixels from the already known character it will ask you for it again.

Anyway, try it and if you run into problem come back here.

I don't remember if Subrip can open .idx files, but if it can't, just open the vob, it'll work.

Edit: If you become a regular user of this program you will after a time have a big database with characters so that you won't have to put them in over and over again. It's quite rare nowadays that I have to do this (though it does happen).

Vobsub .sub files are essentially just a stripped-down VOB containing subtitle streams. Subrip can rip subs from these just as it would rip them from a VOB.

is there anyway to use subrip if u dont have the vobs but just the sub and idx files?

put the sub and the idx file in the same dir and give the subrip to open the idx file.Continue as usal with ocr procedure.Make sure that idx and sub file have the same name

I'm not sure, but I don't think the .idx is even necesary. Change the dropdown box where you select file types when you open a file and you'll probably be able to open the .sub.
