I have captured a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode from BBC FOUR the other day and the picture is in 4:3 ratio but has two black bars on the side that make it 16:9.
I wouldn't like to see the bars on the final DVD. On TV it would look surrounded by a black bars everywhere/
Can I get rid of them without re-encoding?
Maybe using a default zoom on the final DVD that would only show the 4:3 core on a 4:3 TV ? Just guessing
Cheers

I don't know the whole of it yet but I will start to answer this myself because somebody else might be in the same situation.
I found out that I need to author the DVD using Pan&Scan (basicly mainly scan) so that on 4:3 displays the central 4:3 picture would fill the screen and the two black vertical bars on the sides would be excluded. Mmmm, isn't this a great feature all of a sudden.... It might be if I learn how to implement it.
So far I know that scenarist can do this and also ifoedit can modify letterboxed to pan & scan in the DVDs one would author with a less extra-terrestrial ($ wise) authoring software. (thanks to ngreatorex for info)
Can anybody help further?
Like what about "vectors" for pan and scan? How to select the frame size and position?

Hi all
I'm just wondering if you found a way to get rid of these black bars without re-encoding, most of the BBC channels come out with these bars.

No, not really. I didn't have time to look into it further, but I am sure that pan&scan is the solution. If you find a way please post it. I will, too.

Hi, well the solution for not re-encoding lies in the beginning of the capturing process. You will have to use a recording software that can alter the capture while capturing. For example while capturing an analogue source with virtuadub you can set all kind of filters while capturing (like in your case I would have used cropping to put out the bars and then resize, to fit the whole screen again). Somehow I dont know what capture card you are using but it would be handy to know. Otherwhise there is no other solution then post processing your video which equals reencoding.

I am sure that is NOT the way to do it.
I am capturing the mpeg2 signal using a DVB-t card (Nebula).
So it's all digital from start to end.
It's a DVD authoring issue, to zoom (pan) into the middle image, but I still don't know how to do it.
I appreciate your answer anyway.
