I'm sad...
My VIA chipset's fan is dead. It was a noisy cheepo fan.
My question is: Is it save to run my computer whitout? I have a Antec Case with 2 80mm fans, one near my PWS and the other in the midddle of my HDD, below my floppy disk. On my CPU there is a Volcano 9.
The VIA chipset is verticaly between my AGP card and the volcano 9, and horizontaly between my two 80mm fans.
[edit]
The heatsync seems cold at normal operation (0% CPU)...
Replace it, no point takin risks

Consider getting a passive heatsink. Zalman (there must be other companies as well) makes nice, affordable passive chipset coolers (large fins instead of a noisy fan):

It's something like this, with a small fan on top. The heatsinc is still cold at normal uses, and a little warm at high usage.

Well, you can try living without a fan, of course. Try getting the chipset specs regarding max. temperature and cooling requirements from VIA :) ... not possible, I am afraid. At least remove the broken fan so the heatsink can better dissipate the heat.
The only VIA I have is a KT133A and I put said heatsink on it after the fan became noisy ... just to be on the safe side.

I can tell you that my local CompUSA sells replacement chipset fans for about $5 ... pretty easy to replace, although annoying 'cuz you might have to take the whole MB out. You can probably run it ok without the fan, but of course, it's not my fault if it breaks. :)
