View Full Version : DivX to something else on a Mac
I have footage on DivX format that i am trying to edit on a Mac. I can play the DivX files in quicktime but they don't work in adobe premiere. Does anyone know of any free Mac programs that can convert DivX to another format. I tried iMovie, but the clips are too long. Any suggestions?

Mac OS X supports Linux apps. Why don't you try Linux apps? Or you can get a Windows emulator, like VirtualPC, and uses Windows apps.
I don't know much about linux, what apps would you suggest?

I think the OS X port of mplayer (http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/) might work. While primarily a media player, it also has mencoder, which can encode to and from a variety of formats. The only problem I can see is that I'm unsure how far along output to non avi formats is, and it sounds like you might need that. The mencoder documentation (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/encoding.html) mentions only partial support for creating mpeg files.

Sadly I don't know how either. On Linux, I just type make install after doing a configure and compile of the source code. I'd think that the mac version would give you a compiled binary though, since there's only one processor that needs to be supported.
I'm about to show my ignorence of OS X. :) Do you have bash, or some similar program to get a command line? After you unpack the sit file, typing ./mplayer or ./mencoder in that directory might do the trick. There should be a GUI, but I'm not sure how it's set up on the mac compilation. It seems sensible that it'd be set up to use the gui by default on startup, but software being in tune with what I think of as sensible is seldom much of a certainty.

@Otobe,
just use the Export function in Quicktime. Open the DivX in QT, File/Export, and choose (try and go) another compression format which you find working in Adobe to export the Video track to.
Sometimes things are much simpler than u expect, on macs!
have fun.
