Sorry,
I didn't read up yet, but German c't magazin published a Codec comparison today as well. Maybe we should compare both. I try to post tomorrow about.

The puny earthlings had to use some cartoon source sooner or later...

from: http://doom9.org/codecs-103-2.htmIn conclusion, we have been able to see that at 600kbit/s no codec can even get close to DVD quality. i just wonder how doom9 got to that conclusion?
by looking at all the artifacts present that were not on the original DVD? I know you're going to argue that this is not fair since I'm recompressing.. but if I squeeze Matrix movie-only on a single DVD-R using CCE you will in fact not notice similar effects.

Yeah, it's either artifacts or noticeable blurring... I prefer artifacts if it comes down to the choice - but we don't have to use such low bitrates, do we?
BTW, thanks for a GREAT comparison - boy, are you accurate! I know the visual presentation of the shoot-out isn't quite what you were aiming at, yet, but it is the essence that counts! :)

I'd just like to say thanks to Doom9 for his excellent codec comparison. Good work, fella.

Thanks for another informative codec review. DVD might not be the best source for a general codec review but as this site is mainly concerned with DVD backups it was entirely appropriate that you used it as your source.
I appreciate the time and effort you have obviously put into this and I look forward to next instalment. ;)
I capture more than anything so DVD quality has never been my absolute goal....DVD's are just good tests;)
