What about Soviet Russia jokes? ;)
I've just created my /. account and I will only be able to access it tonight so two comments
1) rv9 license: I was in contact with one of the developers and they knew what I was going to do.. so I suppose I'll get away with that license.
2) Regarding putting the uncompressed images up.. I rared them up per movie, and the total size is almost 30MB.. imagine how many people read this and you'll see that it's impossible for me to put uncompressed material online... even at 85% these images will still create a sizeable amount of traffic. And since there's some degradation I mentioned it where it really matters.

Here's a funny slashdot comment:
seriously...... i don't even want to imagine his bandwidth bill... and he even brought it upon himself....... craziness!

Luckily it was posted late at night on a weekend so it should spread the slashdot effect out a bit. If this were posted 2PM EST on a weekday the servers would get really hammered.
For those that don't know what the Slashdot effect is, Slashdot is a very high traffic site which often posts stories with webpages hosted on smaller sites. When a bunch of slashdotters try and access the small site it greatly increases the sites traffic and often overloads the servers, and is called the Slashdot effect. The debate often arises on slashdot as to whether the site has a obligation to warn webmasters or ask their permission before posting a story with a link to the their site.
so Doom9, how do you feel about being posted on slashdot?
EDIT:
PS. In Soviet Russia, the Codecs compare You!
Here (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slashdot_trolling_phenomena) are some other posting tips to make slashdotters feel at home.

Since I manage ONE of the servers I can tell you that in the last 10 hour the traffic has exceeded yesterdays total and I've got 14 more hours to go. :eek:

Hey... After reading a bit, just saw wmansir posting there :) .I could find probably much more other Doom9 members, but I don't have the time to read all the stuff here, let alone something else...
It's always nice to get some major publicity. Fortunately for me, I'm not exactly running a low bandwith site to begin with so the resoruces should be sufficient. So far all servers are up and running.

@int 21h:

keep it comin'!
wef.
season 1 might be, but season2 has not been released yet ;) And I'm about to pre-order season3 in PAL land :)
@doom9:
you're unfair. you've included only koepi in your comparision! ;)
AFAIK I wasn't even mentioned :P It was a private build of Isibaar which got used, as well the settings were either from him or doom9 looked into the right forum threads ;) .
Koepi
as I mentioned.. the developers were contacted... this time I went right to the top and Isibar compiled a build for me (source code is in the mentioned CVS branch) and he also supplied all the settings I used and assisted when I ran into problems.
I think avih refers to the Koepi's avatar, and the Futurama screnshoots. Not to the Xvid build used.
Or, Am I wrong?

"Only one way to find out!" :D
Just a short update:
20 hours of doom9-codec-shootout-test: 15,549,229kb. :eek: And that's just my server, there are 4 more.
The load just about killed me so I had to take it down and upgrade to 1GB RAM.
How much on a regular day? 1 GB?
Something like 4-6 GB. BTW, yesterdays total were +18GB on my server but I do know that at least one of the others maxed out on a T1...

Well this VBB is still amazingly fast with 300 users online Swede. Nice SQL optimizations there ;)
