Any of the experts has a clue?
Problem: When I backup dvds with cce+maestro+dvdupdate I sometimes have the problem that the backup will play fine on a PC and on a standalone from a dvd-rw but NOT from a dvd-r although it was burnt the same way as the -rw disc (UDF/ISO with Nero)!
The problems mainly are hanging when entering a submenue or missing/not working connections between menue and film. Sometimes the dvd won`t even start.
I know, that this may be caused by not correcting vts-sectors, and that those filesets will play fine on a PC but not on a Standalone. But how come that they will play fine from -rw on a standalone?
Is there a difference in the data structure/adressing on a -rw compared to -r?
Did anybody encounter similar problems?
Thanks for some input!

I had the same problem & it came down to media. Which RW & R media are you using?
As far as R-RW difference (from the desktop player point of view) is mainly in reflectivity. RW is less reflective and has the reflectivity similar to DVD9 (dual layer disks) what sometimes confuses older desktop players, and usually results in many of them not playing RW while having no problems with Rs (what is not your case). On the other hand more reflective R disks can saturate some players and generate more read errors. If disk is recorded with questionable media (sometimes even some good ones) that already introduces high PI/PO error count this can render them unreadable on some, but perfectly fine on other players.
That results in a trial & error process that everybody here recommends. Try multiplicity of media (both R & RW) and test what are the most suitable brands for your burners/players combinations.

thanks for the reply, but the problem definately has nothing to do with playback comptibility of media.
I am only using media that has worked well hundreds of times (Ritek G03 or Data Track) on a player that reads everything Pioneer DV525.
The problem is not the typical blocky or jerking playback one encounters with bad media but wrong connections out ofmenues eg vts sector adressing I suppose.
So it must be caused by how the data is written to -r and -rw. There must be a difference!!!

What is the RW media?
Which burner, what speed G03 were burned @ and was it a new batch of G03s?

the rw media was Pioneer V1.1 - almost worth a fortune when I bought it...
I always burn at 1x on Pinoeer 104 to get best results! What do you mean by what generation G03? I recently bought it under brand name PrimeDisk which is the German distributor for Ritek. A friend checked those with his LG-drive and they have good error rates!

Ritek disks are one of the best low cost disks available, but their quality is not completely consistent, you can find bad batches that can produce a few coasters.
The menu connections are fine since RW is OK. However, depending on structure the VTS selected from the menu might be in the end part of the disk and First Play too. These are the exact problems I had. First Play was in VTS_09, extras in 3, 4, 5, … while movie was VTS_01. Disk play fine on RW, but on R sometimes did not start at all sometimes could not select some extras and went back to menu or stopped completely. I used Verbatim (MCC) and Pioneer RW and Ritek (G03) R disks. After error analysis it was obvious that R disk was bad. Recorded the same thing on the other G03 from the middle of the spindle and it was OK. So much about media.
The similar behaviour can be exhibited while re-authoring multiPGC movies and not adjusting the IFOs properly. The latest IFO Update (0.71) has fixed issues with Adjusted Cell Mode and you might try that. However, if that is the problem it should be exhibited on RW too.
These are just some ideas, but I still bet on media.
Are you closing the session when burning to DVD-R?

Concerning this matter I have another problem; I can burn a movie backup to a DVD+RW and when I try to burn a DVD-r I get an error on burning.
I have a Sony DR500-A and use Nero 5.10.28 to burn. The media of +RW is HP and -R is MMORE.
I had burnt two MMORE DVD-R from different sources.
Any idea?
