View Full Version : Is it possible for anyone here to create a WM9 Calculator?

There seems to be no available calculator to calculate the bitrate needed for 2 pass encodings for Windows Media 9. Is there anyone here interested or intending to create one in the near future? Thx
ooops!

One of the good things about WM9 is that it encodes very accurately.
There's not a lot of difference with the finished file size if you encode in 1pass CBR, 2pass CBR or 2pass VBR (my prefered option). However, 2pass VBR does create the largest file size.
It's not actually, too difficult to work it out with a pen, paper and a calculator
That said, if you set the 'Audio' to 64kbps as a standard, a 'Video' setting of.....
615Kbps will encode at 5.00MB per min (or 136-140mins on a 700MB CD)
705Kbps will encode at 5.66MB per min (or 120-123mins on a 700MB CD)
955Kbps will encode at 7.55MB per min (or 90-94 mins on a 700MB CD)
1475kbps will encode at 11.3MB per min (or 60-62 mins on a 700MB CD)
The above is assuming you are encoding using a pixel size of 720x576 at 25fps. Works for me first time, every time. But takes a bloody long time!

Use gordian knot to load your .d2v file, and then just go setting up an encode as your normally would, but make sure that the codec is selected as divx 3.11.. This has given me a pretty much faultless bitrate which is pretty much at the desired filesize for a 2 pass VBR encode.
