How soon until some boffin creates a home 2xDVD5 to DVD9 single disc pressing kit ? Surely it can be done. Does any expert here think this is possible in the future ?

You mean make a flipper or make an actual dual layered disc? (Making an actual dual layered disc is impossible due to many, many factors, including the unavailability of the equipment and media needed for different wavelength requirements)

John, this has been discussed many, many, many times here. In short, "burning" discs and "manufacturing" discs are two different processes, and don't expect that sort of technology for burning. Rather, expect higher capacity media and drives over time.
