But, I need them. Only problem is that I can never really understand what codecs I need. So, what I need is a good "Guide to Codecs". There was only, not very good, on the Sharereactor forum, but I think it's outdated, and the bloody forum is always down. So, can anyone help me?

The easiest way to playback videos is to install the codecs and make the videos. But I'll list out some DirctShow Filters that you can use for playback. All of these are on the download page under filters, unless another url is given.
Video Playback:
ffdshow (http://sf.net/projects/ffdshow/) will play all the divx/xvid/mpeg-4 simple profile videos.
Fraunhofer video and audio codecs will let you play mpeg-2 (aka DVD) videos.
Audio Playback:
ac3filter (http://sf.net/projects/ac3filter/) will playback ac3 files. (even multichannel playback)
"Ogg Vorbis Direct Show filter implementation" will let you play OGG Vorbis/OGM files. (You will probably also need the "Subtitle filter for Ogg media streams" too)
If you are trying to playback Real Media (http://realone.com/) or Quicktime (http://quicktime.apple.com/) videos, you will need to install the player.
With these, you should be able to playback nearly all videos. I have probably missed some, but I can't think of any now. (Head is clogged with a cold :()

PS. Also, Sharereactor is a rather shady place (lots of piracy). I don't think you've broken the rule by mentioning it or not. I can't penalize you even if it was, but just a friendly warning, no illigal activities are condoned here. This site is dedicated to the legal backup of videos.

Don't forget the XCD DirectShow filter available here (http://webs.ono.com/usr016/de_xt/mcf.html).

I'm just trying to give him some freindly advice so that he doesn't get into trouble with the mods. I personally detest downloading movies from anywhere because the quality that people share just pains my eyes to look at. ;)

I know you're helping, it was just funny to read that sharereactor was such a place. It must be obvious for anyone who ever went there and not 6 years old.
