View Full Version : DTS in AVI - Codec Problems?

Hi!
I'm trying to use the recently released DTS codec (in test.rar) from your site to make AVIs with DTS sound, but for some reason the do not play correctly. First there the video accelerated for about 0.5 seconds, now after using avimux 1.13 small pieces of the audio are skipped, again about 0.5 seconds, while video plays normal. Any idea why such a thing might happen and how to correct it?
Some System Information:
I use a Ahtlon XP 1800, 512 MB RAM and WindowsXPSP1
I used BSPlayer (0.86, build 493) to play the videos.
I used iviaudio.ax version 4.5.11.7
Another strange thing is that Windows Media Player (9.00.00.2980) allocates up all memory and than crashes when I try to play one of these DTS-AVIs.
Thanks for help in advance!

It doesn't work with BSPlayer. You're not the first one to find that out :D

So whose fault is it? BSPlayers, iviaudio.ax's or avi2ac3dts.ax's? Furthermore it does not work with the windows media player which suggests at least a weird codec-graph.
Btw, is the source to avi2ac3dts.ax available for me to take a look at it?

That filter is made by Gabest, so please ask him. As for the player, I don't know whose fault it is, just try others (such as ZoomPlayer)

Finally I found some time to test the Zoomplayer (3.00 Standard as it seems, .EXE was dated 20th April 2003 18:57). However AVIs with DTS still do not play correctly. I observed CPU load and it was about 50%, so I think that it computer is good enough to play these files.
Any idea how to fix this? Has anyone else observed such behaviour?
TIA!
Same here. First I thought it was audio delay, then VBR interleaving, but afaik DTS isn't VBR, and the same happens in OGM. Also as soon as I seek the audio speeds up about 1.5x and I have to reboot to reset that. Alas, I guess no DTS + XviD + mode2 + 90min-CDR for me then. It was a nice dream.

I tested a bit more with DTS AVIs and I found out that there are so far only problems if I activate 6 channel sound. If I just use stereo there seems to be no problems. Any idea how that can be?
BTW, I'm using a Soundblaster Audigy with latest drivers (from 12/2002).
Does this resolve problems other people had?
I only use stereo mode, because my surround set is broken atm. Please please PRETTY please does ANYONE know the cause of these problems? I would REALLY like to encode Avalon with DTS sound. Otherwise I have way too much video bitrate anyway, and then I would have to increase the resolution even further, and refilter the video.

I orginally tried to use DTS in AVI's, but the only way I can use them is by the raw *.DTS file, and combined with an MPEG-2 video I make DVD-R's of movies. 2-ch DTS tracks seem useless to me: I dont think dolby or dts sounds very different in 2-ch mode.
I also fooled around with Ogg 6ch audio but that didnt work either. For me DTS works only when authoring DVD's.

Well, I ripped the thx logo from Terminator 2, encoded it to divx5 with gordian knot, used avi-mux to mux it with the dts track and set the iviaudio filter to "enable s/pdif output" and now I have dts sound to my external decoder. (creative inspire 5700 speakers).
I'm gonna try it to a movie now.

Oh, and only with bsplayer it plays right. With media player 9 and powerdvd no sound. I don't know about windvd, I uninstalled it. And I also installed dtssource.ax and avi2ac3dts.ax from the test.rar file. (Don't know if they did any good though).
