View Full Version : DVDShrink: chapter structure and ccaption problem

I decided to see what DVDshrink could do with heavy compression of Mulholland Drive, since that's the only way to get it on one dvd5 (getting rid of one of the audio streams isn't much help). At Level 8 it's done a very good job, playing back on my Apex 600A with no macro blocks and very acceptable levels of occasional smearing. But now there's no chapter structure -- meaning I can't skip forward at the chapter level, only by fast forwarding -- and I've got closed captions which didn't show up when I tested the vobs on PowerDVD. I've previously used DVDshrink to minimally compress another movie, and it retained chapter structure.

So, how can I get rid of the closed captions, and keep the chapters? Thanks for any help.

Using DvdShrink, Imgtool for the .iso, DVDecrypter to burn. Sony DRU 500a and Ritek G03

Is it possible to use IFOedit to redo the IFOs to get back the chapter structure?

To answer my own question: yes. Ifoedit created new chapters and they showed up in PowerDVD. I decided to just kill the subtitles by eliminating all the subpictures. However, that still gave me blurry green subtitles.

This leaves the question of whether it makes sense to create new IFOs each time with IFOedit. Any thoughts?

I thought Mulholland Drive didn't have any chapters in the first place--some kind of "artistic" statement by Mr. Lynch. Secondly, are you trying to strip subtitles, or closed captions? Captions are an entirely different beast than subtitles. Subtitles are muxed with the video and audio files to create the VOB files, while the captions are already "hiding" inside of the MP2 files. There is a tool called ReStream that will (among other things) copy an MP2 file and strip the captions out in the process. You can download that here at Doom9.

That's interesting about the chapters. If you're right, then IFOedit created 26 of them out of thin air. Can it do that?

I'm new to this, and may be confusing closed caption with subtitles. What I'm seeing is not just the English subtitles, but also "[hands clapping]" and descriptions of music. Isn't that closed caption? Anyway, I found an IFOedit thread that on subtitles that I'll try out today and then report back. I don't understand why DvdShrink didn't completely kill them when I stripped all the subpictures.

Thanks for responding.

Maybe I was thinking of some other movie.

Anyway, a lot of DVD manufacturers get lazy and copy the closed captions into the subtitles (they call this "English Subtitles for the Hearing-Impaired"). In a nutshell, if you can turn them on and off with your DVD remote control, it's a subtitle. If you have to use a button on your TV remote control to turn them off and on, it's a closed caption.
