Hey guys/gals, I'd ask you to be patient b/c i'm completely new to video editing.. i have a very vague idea of what it is...

I primarily backup hollywood DVD's to DVD-R and recently am trying to figure out how to transfer from svhs to dvdr. Firstly, what is/are primary purpose/s for Vegas Video and Pinnacle Studio 8.0?? they're called 'video editing' software but i usually use a ripper, stripper, re-encoder, authoring and burning softwares (some freeware, others retail)...

Can i make use of Vegas or Pinnacle?? I'm thinking of buying one but really am unsure whether I really need it or not--i don't even own a camcorder. Can someone explain and also opine as to which is "better" (neither are really cheap, but i understand that they are cheap relative to some pro stuff.. ??).. Also, is the mpge2 encoder in either app 'better' than CCE (which is what I use)??

Thanks.

If you do not own a DV camcorder and are just ripping, there is no need to own an NLE like Vegas or Premiere which is for editing video and cutting into scenes, adding transitions, etc. This is not what you are doing.

Just get the Freeware or commercial version of TMPG to use as an mpeg encoder or CCE. Between the both there is nothing you can't do a good job of encoding. For Progessive encoding, CCE is still considered the King Daddy, although many think very highly of TMPG, especially for interlaced source. My personal choice is CCE for P and ProCorder for I.
