since i've upgraded the firmware to 1.9 i havent been able to burn dvd's. i just tryed installing the 2.0 firmware but the firmware check program still tells me i have 1.9. all i could find on what to do is try changing the burning mode to PIO, so how do i do that? i have winxp if that matters, from what i read it seems like there is a different way of updating the firmware in 2k/xp then in 98.

I used Intel Application accelerator to move from DMA-W2 to PIO4.
Firm 2.0 is the best for Ritek G03 & G04, but cause lots of failure with bulkpaq Gen3 and Gen4...
You should be able to upgrade from 1,9 to 2,0 without any prob, and even move back using the /F option

it's reading as 2.0 firmware now but i still get an I/O error that says something about invalid address for write. i have a msi mobo so i dont think i can use that intel app, is there any way to do it through control panel or a downloadable app?

you can use intel soft if you have an intel chipset.
Do you get a power calibration error ? if yes, check with another media and try @X1
