I read the help, I read the stickys, and I searched. Now, I am not a know-it-all in video conversion department whatsoever, in fact, I know nothing. I know there are variables, but I was wondering if anybody had any experience in my three questions and if I missed these answers in any of the posts I apologize way far in advance.

1. If I set my bitrate straight across the board at 2530 with a 2 pass VBR and my audio at 192 joint stereo, does anybody have any experience with this coming out great? I tried it, got no errors but cannot tell the difference between this setup and my mpeg1.

2. I don't care about burning on a cd to play on any machine other than my computer. I want to convert once to the best video quality for me with an decent sound. I already have over 400 individual files to rerip and convert since they were all done in mpeg1.

Thanks

What do you want to convert? Do you mean you want to encode mpeg1 files with VCD resolution as SVCD? Thatīs nonsense, because the ecnoded file will never have better quality than the source - file. If you want to watch DVDīs or avis in the best quality on your computer and you donīt care about space, just copy it to your computer (make an image of your DVD). Every coding will result in a loss of quality, even if not noticeable. So you have to be satisfied with your current mpeg1 - files.

No, I am going to re-rip and re-convert to mpeg2 and delete my mpeg1 files. I cannot just copy or just use the ripped vob files because my program will not play and def. will not do a fade between two files for me. I can only play mpeg1, or mpeg2.

Ok, so if you want to encode it to mpeg2 at SVCD - resolution, TMPGEnc will give you the best reults with 2 pass VBR, but the average bitrate of 2530 is too high. You can go lower. For audio i per4sonally always use 224 kbps. But to really find out you should start some tests. Encode chapter-samples with different settings, and you will find out soon, what gives you the 'best' quality.

Just for curiosity: Which program allows to fade between mpg-files?

I use a program called Swift Ultralite. It is in its basic form. I started to use it for karaoke and would never use the autofade portion and one day tried it with my dvd, which it wouldn't do. I then converted to mpeg1, mpeg2 and mpeg4. It faded everything except for the mpeg2's, which later I just found out it was because I was running 98se on a new computer. Once I switched over to xp it took care of everything which is where I am at now. Swift is going to be coming out with a more advanced version I think called Swift Ultra. It will have two seperate players with both auto and manual fade whereas, Swift Ultralite just has the automatic fade. It is simple but for my needs do-able for now. The regular version of Swift will allow many different types of fades and will allow video inputs also plus more, but I think that is pretty far down the road. I do believe Swift Ultra will have the beta out soon and I am lucky enough to be on the testing team. I think they have lots going for them but hopefully they don't fall behind on the bandwagon, like I know some dj (mp3) programs have that I thought had great potential.
