I just converted a xvid avi to dvd using tmpgenc, I did not touch any of the settings, But when I burnt the dvd the picture is fine but there is no sound. I checked the mpg file that tmpgenc created but there is no sound there either. What have I done wrong?

What DVD-authoring application are you using? Generally, most authoring applications require you to provide them with elementary audio and video streams (i.e. seperate streams, not multiplexed to each other). Please be more specific about what you imported, and what application you are using, and I'll get back to you.

Also TMPGEnc doesn't like VBR audio and won't recognise it. You can confirm this by opening the AVI in TMPGEnc, click Settings > Advanced tab > double click Source Range. Now if you drag the slider to the right you'll probably see no audio below the picture preview - any audio will show up as a green line.
If this is the case, and you want to use TMPGEnc you will have to run the AVI through VirtualDub - do a direct stream copy of the video and make the audio PCM if you have the space of CBR MP3 (this will take a bit longer)

It could also be that the audio track is AC3. TMPGEnc doesn't much care for AC3, in my experience. You could rip and re-mux the audio (sorry for being brief, I'm almost late for class!), OR you could just have TMPGEnc re-encode the audio by changing the VFAPI priorities, so that directshow has top priority. Sorry again for not going into much detail, but if you do have AC3 audio in that divx file, I'm sure someone here will be able to help you out!
