i have a sony 500a writer and thus far have not added any of the firmware updates to it. I have been backing up my dvd collection using a range of software including instantcopy, dvddecrypter, smartripper, dvdshrink, dvd2one etc and i have not had a single problem.

I am worried that if i add the firmware updates to the sony driver then all my dvd software will stop working. I am always paranoid about these things.

Should i add the firmware updates or not????? Has anyone had any problems in backing up dvds?

thanx 4 your help and advice

Typically, a new firmware is meant to make your hardware work better, not worse!
Flashing your Sony shouldn't have any influence on the compatibility of your drive with the programs your are using to read/write your media.

For the thread on the latest firmware release on the Sony Storagesupport pages, see Sony DRU500A firmware 2.0e (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=49708)

if u upgrade the firmware and u have problems with it(what will like actually never happen) then u can downgrade easily, not like pioneer once u upgrade that u can go back to old but with a lot of diificult pocedures.
