Hello folks,

I have a concert on dvd I just bought, I want to extract the audio
file from the dvd so I can burn it as an audio cd to play in my
car. If it's possible, can I get some direction?

thanks,
l0st1.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I hope you find it useful.

First, the best answer is "it depends."

The tools and guides available from Doom9's website (www.doom9.org) expect you to have a PC with a DVD-ROM drive, and the majority of the tools here are for MS-Windows based workstations.

You'll also need a CD-burner drive, software that can burn music, and CD-R or CD-RW media.

DVD's may be standard, but the audio can be in several different formats.

There are no free tools that can decode Digital Theatre Sound (DTS) soundtracks, but if your soundtrack is either Dolby Digital or Linear PCM, then yes, there are tools that can help you.

I'd start at www.doom9.org, and first click on The Basics. There's a guide in there called DVD Structure that will help you understand what all those files are on the DVD. You'll discover what VOB and IFO files are, and you'll need to have that understanding for the next step.

Then, you will probably want to click on the Guides section, and select the Ripping guides. There are guides for several common "ripping" tools that can be used to extract one or all of the soundtracks from a DVD. I recommend following the DVD Decrypter guide, in IFO mode, and selecting the appropriate soundtrack Stream for demuxing.

If the soundtrack is Dolby Digital, you will end up with an .ac3 file on your hard disk. If the soundtrack is Linear PCM, you will end up with a .wav file.

Dolby Digital (.ac3) will need to be transcoded to .wav for your music burning software. There are many audio tools that can do this, you'll find a large list on the Downloads page. I've used BeSweet (and the BeSweetGUI) for this sort of thing, you can also use Azid, HeadAC3he, and others.

I hope this helps get you started!
