6ch surround sound possible?

I was wondering if it is possible to have 6 channel surround sound in linux right now. If it is, how could it be done with a c-media 8738 pci card? What software would I need for playback of 6ch ac3 audios? I am guessing that alsa is what would let me do this, but I have searched and I haven't found anything useful about multichannel playback. I have a red hat 9.0 (kernel 2.4.20-8) system right now, on a Athlon XP 2000+ system.
