i dont know about re-encdoing menus because you have to stop and start all the time, so you would need an i-frame at the beginning of every vob-id. But you should strip the language menus. If there are severeal languages in those menus (and there probably areconsidering the size) then you could follow the guide to strip out unwanted language menus, keeping only english, and you could reduce the sixe to about 300megs or something.

Just follow the basic ifoedit guide on doom9

I´m almost sure that you can´t reencode menus, but I guess you can
transcode them. The whole frame structure will remain unchanged.

transcode , and how would i go about transcoding a menu ? :-)

I´m sorry. I´m in big hurry right now. You can do it in ReMPEG. I guess that only thing you have to do is transcode file VTS_xx_0.VOB. I´m not sure if it works, and don´t have time to test it right now. I hope tomorrow i will have more time...

And stripping different language mutation of the menu is also good idea. So firstly try to strip out unwanted languages from your menu and then try ReMPEG to do the rest.

You can reencode animated menu with CCE. Demux, extract subpictures, and so on. But then you will have to recreate all the interactivity from scratch in your authoring program, I mean loas subpictures, recreate button actions, assigning buttons to subpictures, and so on...
This is really a pain in the noise generator, so I would advice to use an all-in-one program like IC or DVD95copy.

My suggestion would be if your using the whole CCE method would be to get a transcode program like DVD95copy, I can't think of the free ones name, and do all your DIF4U stuff, and when it makes the VIDEO_TS directory, just take the menu VOBs and transcode them, down to like 25 or 30 % and then put them back in the VIDEO_TS and then go from there with your bitrates and main movie renecode.

Skoal, I agree 100% with this method. I did it on a particular movie where the menu was 1.7GB, and it worked ok.

Yeah you can just select the VIDEO_TS and have DVD95Copy not reduce anything but the menus then put them right back, this method acutally works great if your using reauthorist, b/c you can have DIF4U do everything first, then transcode menus, then open up RA and it will do some increadible bitrate calculations for you. All these great tools almost make it dissappointing to copy a DVD-5

Coona :) I didn't even notice it was my 500th post (I guess 490 of them are pure crap anyway :D

Thanks for noticing :D

its more a great way to learn everything in a DVD Authoring app, rather than a pain in the noise generator, i even did it for Gone In 60 Seconds.

Auenf, you won't have to convince me that one of the main goals of this DVD thing we're in is about understanding and mastering how this works. You just have to see my contributions and discussions in the forums and on #Doom9 with DoItFast4u to notice that I'm a great fan of the "do it all by hand" method.
SO I naturally think you are absolutely right.

But sometimes, doing a backup is not about spending a whole day trying to reproduce a single menu or learn how an authoring app works. That's just what I meant. I've been fighting with reencoding animated menus (and almost got some success there in reproducing the exact same behaviour as the original DVD), but this was really something tedious and I didn't have time to fully achieve it, hence my "reasonable" advice for people who might not want to spend hours on it...Nothing more.

But I'll still do it the manual way as soon as I have time :)

Yeah, you can see how much work is involved to create just the menus, and on the one hand it`s fun to re-create them on the other hand it`s very, very stintings..

use dvd95copy then

reauther the main vob set and add it back with ifoupdate

as long as the main film looks good whats the problem

@bex,

I think we (Tantabootsy, you and me) agree on this. I did use DVDShrink to reencode extras and menus, and kept the DIF4U+DOCCE4U way for the main movie and it worked great (see my other post in th "DVDshrink" thread in the "one click solutions" forum).
