View Full Version : Avisynth vs. VFAPI to frameserve to CCE2.50

After reading/searching a bit, seems Avisynth is the best and most populare frameserving method. I've also read that it leads to much faster encoding, yes? I initially tried frameserving with Avisynth without any success whatsoever.. Wilbert even tried helping me via private email but I just couldn't get the damned thing to work..
Is it "worthwhile" for me to learn it vs. using VFAPI? Seems VFAPI is soooo simple compared to learning Avisynth (yea, I'm being lazy :). Advantages/disadvantages? Most of my encoding involves DVD to DVD-R. Thanks.

VFAPI is an under appreciated piece of work for sure. It is just dead simple and works so well. Downside is it only serves RGB24 and is somewhat slower than Avisynth.
But, before you go there, perhaps I can help you get CCE working. Frankly that is about the only think I consider myself good at. It is simple, really :)
Let me know when you are able to play the "version" example in the examples folder without error.

I've got CCE working.. the problem is that I can't get Avisynth to work, meeaning...
Back a few months ago, the problems started with just installing the damned thing.. it was all downhill from there.. lol. Wilbert was kind enough to guide me in un-install and fresh install of 2.07.. But even then, my scripts (which I've disposed of since) just wouldn't work--forgot what the errors exactly stated.. But I do remember banging my head against the wall until I conceded and just went back to VFAPI.. :)
So you lost me when you say, "Let me know when you are able to play the "version" example in the examples folder without error." ?? Please explain.. Thanks!

I meant help you get cce working with Avisynth.
Install Avisynth 2.51. Then goto start>programs>avisynth 2.5>examples and load and run the version.avs you will find there in WMP.
This is the most basic test to see if avisynth is installed and operating correctly. Let us know what you see when you run version.avs
We can then go from there, depending on what you answer and say you saw.

> Install Avisynth 2.51. ...
Will Avisynth 2.51 give fewer problems?
Is it easier to install then Avisynth 2.08?
Is it really more stable and/or faster then Avisynth 2.08 when serving CCE 2.50?
Please share your toughts with us...

@jbenj01,
Don't forget to install DivX5 or a recent XviD-binary of Koepi (see also YV12-faq), and use vdubmod instead of vdub. But for the version.avs test this shouldn't matter (except that you might need huffyuv).

Thanks DDog.. will do.
Hi Wilbert,
OK, but I have a question/s.. I did a fresh re-install of Win2000 last nite, but copied my 'video tools' folder into my 2nd HD. After re-install, I copied the folder back into my primary HD.. in that folder was Avisynth 2.07.. Are all drivers, etc.. intact, or no?? Must I re-install each application (~30.. yikes!)??
FYI, I printed out all the info from avisynth.org for reading.. seems futile at the moment.. :) Thanks again for everyone's help.

You have to reinstall everything that puts stuff in your reg. file. All codecs, AviSynth, etc.
