Hi everybody
I've just installed Windows XP with SP1.
I'm a typical computer user who use it for many purposes.
I'd like to play from time to time with watching movies, coding mp3 etc. but a basic level only.

My question is-which codecs (audio/video) should be installed.

There are some complete codecs packs in the internet but as I know it is not recommended to install every codec included.

I've thought about Divx 5, Divx 3, Radium mp3 but my knowledge is rather poor what the choice can fit beginner needs.
Also something can over write previous installed codec/libraries.

Is any good list or recommendaton what need to be installed and which sequence?

Thx gurus

Monica

What with directshow filters, acm and vfw codecs, your question is not quite as easy at it seems.

for encoding in avi container : divx5.03, mp3
check out one or two all-in-one video encoding tool.
real media rv9 is also easy to handle with tools such as x2real.

for decoding (playback) : ffdshow, AC3, DVD filters, OGM filter, directvobsub (subtitles)
also codecs for : wmv9, rm, mov (installing the official player is the easiest, you can then use media player classic instead).

The consensus is that you must be able to install/uninistall each filter/codec individually in case of a mess up. The filter versions available in the download section at doom9 are up to date and safe.

If you cannot playback a file use Gspot to identify the problem.

Great thanx for your recommendation.

But to have all doubds resolved:
If I install PowerDVD Player, do I need additional DVD filters and AC3?

If not can it be:

-Fraunhofer video and audio codecs
-AC3Filter 0.66b

Or another?

As a OGM filter-"Ogg Vorbis Direct Show filter implementation" from doom9 site is a correct choice?

Sorry to take your time.

I think you will not be able to playback AC3 audio in avi files.
If this is the case try AC3Filter.

If not can it be:

-Fraunhofer video and audio codecs
-AC3Filter 0.66b

Yes.

As a OGM filter-"Ogg Vorbis Direct Show filter implementation" from doom9 site is a correct choice?

Yes.
