I've done a lot of DVD Backups, but now that I'm the webmaster for my local outdoor club I wanted to put a couple of our summer holidays video clips on the site. As far as I know, MPEG2 would not be recommended, but is MPEG1 Ok or something else, and what encoder would you suggest?

I did just that a few minutes ago. It's hard to determine what settings to use though, and whether I need a streaming server or not. I just added the video to one of the pages using Frontpage. Maybe a link to a server somewhere is better?

What kind of budget do you have for this? Almost all the streamming internet media types will have a licensing fee. I have no idea what they would be, but you will want to look for that because it may decide for you. One day, hopefully not too far away, theora and ogg will really help you out here. ;-)

I added the clip 2 ways. One by adding a .wmv video to the page with Frontpage, and the other putting a link to my other webspace on my other ISP. Both seem to playback fine although the clip which I uploaded is about 6MB over my limit for personal space, it was taken OK. I guess I should phone my ISP tomorrow and find out if I will be charged for all that space!
