View Full Version : gknot homepage
Hi,
I was wondering what was happening with a homepage for gknot now the Open Source development has started for it.
I'd love to help out with the project itself, but seeing as Java is the only language I can program in to any sort of degree, thats not going to happen. Therefore I would be happy to work on a web page for the project (unless someone else already has plans for this of course).
I can also provide hosting for the site if need be.

hi!
we definitely need somebody for the gknot homepage on sourceforge:
http://gordianknot.sourceforge.net
tell me your sourceforge login and you're in. :)
(you need to get the login to be able to upload to the site)
wef.
My SF login is: mtc
what sort of stuff/sections do you want on the page?
I was thinking of using a news script or something so any of the developers could post news about updates etc, so do you know if SF lets us use PHP or anything like that?
Thanks
Chris
EDIT: Ok I figured out the PHP question for myself (they do), but it'd still be cool if you could let me know what sections etc you wanted.
TheWEF : do you have a colour copy of the GKnot logo about the same size as the logo used on http://gknot.doom9.org ?? If you do, would you be able to email it to me or something, as I can't seem to find one anywhere.
Thanks

@mtc: try looking within gknot program on the info tab for the color logo
ah of course, why didn't I think of that
Thanks

hi mtc!
i added you to the project as chief web designer ;) :
5. Setup your group's web site.
I'll assume that you have some sort of web page or site built already that you wish to put up on SourceForge to give your group a public face. Login to SourceForge using SSH, for example ;
ssh -l loginname yourproject.sourceforge.net
you will now be in your home directory. All group files are stored in a directory structure for each project. The group directory structure is split out by the first, then first and second, letters of the project name. From here all group files are stored in /home/groups/y/yo/yourproject. Change to this directory. All your web pages are stored in the htdocs directory. Going in here will contain index.php, which is a blank page that says you haven't uploaded a web page yet. Logout, and copy the files for your web page using scp, a program which comes with ssh. For example:
scp localfile loginname@yourproject.sourceforge.net:/home/groups/y/yo/yourproject/htdocs/
I suggest you gzip up your site, send it in one go using scp, then login with ssh and gunzip it.
So what should be on the web page ? Perhaps you'd like the following, as well as your project's information ;
1. A link to the projects group page on SourceForge.
2. Mailing list links (we'll create them in a second)
3. A SourceForge icon and web counter - see the site documentation for this.
4. A link to the CVS web interface at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/yourproject
5. Some info about using CVS specific to your project.
6. Setup mailing lists for your project.
If your project isn't that active yet (or only has one lonely developer) your mailing lists will be very quiet, however I still suggest you look to the future and setup three standard lists for your project: a devel list for developers, a users list for users, and an announce list for new version announcements.
Do this via your group page using the mailing list admin link. Its quite simple so you shouldn't have any problems...
tell me if you are missing permissions for ssh shell login.
i have a moving (turning) gif knot - i will mail it to you...

Yikes that sounds overly important :D
anyway, I've uploaded a test layout just to check that my permissions etc were right...and so far everything looks ok. Now I just have to make a proper site :)

@mtc: loading the sf project page in that little frame doesn't make too much sense.. you have to scroll around all over the place. I suggest you use _blank for that link, or _parent. And how about making that frame a bit larger? it fills 1/4 of my screen and to put any useful info in it you have to start scrolling. And how about ordering the links in alphabetical fashion (no I'm not just saying that to be more to the top;)?

Hi Doom9,
Thanks for the suggestions,
I suggest you use _blank for that link
done :)
And how about making that frame a bit larger?
Point taken. I'll probably redesign the site a bit, but seeing as I've got an assignment due tommorrow, that won't be happening today, although hopefully I should be able to work on it a bit tommorrow night.
As for the links, I totally agree. I was actually planning on making a nice logically catorgarized links page like yours, but I've had a few things come up that prevented me from having as much free time as a would have liked so I just threw up that page so there was something there in the mean time. So again hopefully I will sort that out tomorrow.
Just got to git rid of this damn programming assignment first....maybe next time I won't leave it till the last minute :)
Thanks

I'm able to login there, but still cannot post - it says either "not logged in", or just time out...

I know, it seems to work on the odd occasion but not all the time. Seeing as this is hardly good enough, I've gotten a new news script which I will hopefully implement tomorrow.
Sorry for the delays getting this working properly, I would've had it done sooner but unfortunately I had a grandparent pass away at the end of last week and had to go out of town for a few days to the funeral...so things kind of got behind...

I'm sorry for your loss. :(
And don't worry - it's a matter of getting it right, rather than quick. Take your time :)

that's cool.
I figured that while it's still in alpha stages the news isn't quite as important, but I'll certainly try and have it working for when the first beta comes out.

My condolations.
The new version looks great. I might even consider pointing gknot.doom9.org to the sf page once the final version is out. What do you think?
And while I don't mind that you use the existing FAQs, it would be nice if you credited the source ;)

I've gone credited the FAQs to you site. DaveEL is currently in the process of turning all the FAQs into a wiki so people can add new topics etc to them easily as they desire. Once this has done the FAq wiki will replace the current FAQ page, but I'll see to it that due credit is given to you :)
I had pm'd UHT for permission to use the FAQs from the gknot.doom9.org site, but I'm guessing that he doesn't vist here much anymore because I never got a reply.
Thanks
Chris
