After installing the latest Nvidia drivers I found that I could no longer watch DVDs on my PC. After a long search I cam across this message on another forum essentially stating something along the lines that Nvidia has disabled some video card's ability to playback DVDs

ATI's video cards are sounding more and more attractive...

I hope this is of use to someone. It has caused me alot of confusion.

Cheers,

Different NVIdia cards have different TV encoders.
The Geforce 4 MX 440 has the NV17 encoder chip though,
therefore Macrovision cannot be disabled by TV tool.
I assume this one will be OK for playback then.
Cards based on BT868 and Conexant CX25870 TV encoders
can have macrovision disabled by TV Tool (i.e) record
DVD onto VHS by connecting VCR to tv-out.

Ever battled setting up Geforce on TV and monitor at same
time check out this excellent guide.

I have it already, but I still only get black and white
picture when connected to my VCR. This is most confusing
as I managed to playback a divx movie and tape it once before.
Picture was excellent. The only changes that I can think of is
that I was using the oldest Nvidia drives that can on Cd with
my card. Also it was before I installed XP SP1. I just havn't
had the time to experiment. But I will nail it down still.

For macrovision, with TVTool you can disable it :)

Have fun!!! :D

For the black and white issue, TVTool can fix it too!! No joking!

As I said above my card has the NV17 TV chip. TVTOOL developers
don't have the spec's on this chip, so TVTOOL doesn't support
Geforce cards with this chip and they don't know if it ever will.
When I install TVTOOL I get error message saying no supported chip
found.
I did solve the black and white issue though. Problem was in my
displays configuration. I have S-Video cable to my TV, which has
S-Video input. But when I connect to my VCR I have to use a S-Video
to Composite connector as VCR only has composite input.
I had my output set to S-Video in settings. I had to change it
to autoselect or composite out. No pictures OK again.
Sometimes it's the small things we overlook.
