I was just looking at the amazing speed I ge from CCE and wondering would it be possible to send it a live image using an avisynth file then 'on the fly' record it as well.
Just better than buying a dvd recorder!
Plz post even if your not sure

with my ATI card, i can capture to 'DVD Quality' MPEG-2 on the fly, altho i cant really tell how good the compression really is due to my heavily amplified reception.

I dont think you understand me.
But anyway what rpogram are you using to capture mpeg 2 on the fly?? or is it built into the card??

I personally use a Firewire interface connected to my Sony Digital-8 Video camera and to my PC. The Sony has digitizing pass-through, so I just run the analog through it and capture using PowerVCR to MPEG-2 in real time. It works very nicely. If I am interested in high quality I capture as DV to segmented .AVI files and use CCE to convert...
I'm not sure how you could use AVISYNTH with realtime data...

ok, well there seems to be enough ways to get live mpeg2(not using CCE sadly :-( as it would be deadly at it) does anybody know about creating and burning a live vob file???

the program is ATI MMC, which is a collection of TV/Video In capture, DVD playback, File Playback, and something else i cant remember.
it comes with every ATI card, and the program will only install on an ATI card.

Dude, I understand what you mean. I've been there myself. I really do wish you luck since you're going to be climbing up a steep hill in terms of usability. On a note regarding TiVo though, one thing you won't emulate that is a feature missed by a lot of people until they have it is "Wishlists". "Season Passes" too for that matter. Anyway, let's say you like Nicholas Cage. Set an "Actor" wishlist for him and TiVo finds and records (if you tell it to), every single thing with Nicholas Cage in it! Even if he does an interview on the Tonight Show, it will know it and record it for you. You can do the same thing for genres or even just basic keywords.
A "Season Pass" will record all showings of a given show you choose. You can tell it you only want "First Runs" too so it won't record repeats. If it gets pushed back because of programming changes, the TiVo will know and will record it at the correct time! :) Sorry for my "preachy preachy". hehe ;) It's just when you come across something this great, it's hard not to share it with others.
PS. I didn't even get into the fact that with a few small hacks, you can boost the recording space to over 100GB and even extract your recordings (via 100Mbps ethernet at a rate of about 1.7MB per second - ie. A one hour show only takes about 10min to extract) and you can burn it to DVDR for archiving. :D

yea, actually if I was going to purchase something like this it would be with my sattellite provider (skydigital) the quailty from the box itself (i have) is crap. But apparently there tivo like boxes offer better quailty and in terms of functionality, since they are built by the company them selves they are a whole lot better. They are "built in" to the sky digital service.
Anyway... ill see how it goes... ;-)

Good luck! Be sure to come back with an update and let us know what ideas you come up with.

update,
right I am torn between making a tivo like box and an arcade machine using mame. I'd actually rather the latter but am having problems finding an old arcade machine here in ireland.
Any I got a copy of show shifter and a RF mouse. This covers my basic functionality. I can use the rf mouse as a remote and showshifter automates a load of stuff.
I need a tv out card now though. And I have been told there are NO GOOD TV OUT CARDS OUT THERE THAT CAN OUTPUT AT 720X576.
I just relised I had the caps locks on... sorry
;-)
Anyway, anybody got a good capture card they'd care to comment on??
