I've never seen this before: 116 minute movie "Trading Places" with 3 audio tracks and one subtitle track is 6.3 GB. Shouldn't this be more like 4.2GB? I stripped the movie down so it only has one audio track and one subtitle track and it is still 6.0GB. Why did the manufacturer over bit the movie?

Just to piss you off... :)

Actually, time/size really means nothing considering the bitrate difference could mean a 80 minute movie being 6 GB and a 3 hour movie being 4.37 GB. Most studios produce a movie based on the type of movie (lots of darkness, fast moving action, number/variety of colors displayed throughout movie, etc.), and hence this would determine the bitrate that the studio chooses to use (though I think that most are going with higher bitrate/DVD9s(dual layer) to make them more difficult to copy (requiring re-encoding).

I've used the following guide to copy about 385 DVDs that required re-encoding. It's very helpful, and though I didn't quite know what I was doing at first, if you keep plugging away at it 'experience is the best teacher':

Most of the software required you can download here (at doom9.org) or there (dvdrhelp.com), but I got some using kazaalite.com program to find cracked version of CCE, etc. I don't care much for DVD Maestro, but it's been doing the job for me. Trying to get a good copy of Pinnacle studio 8, but having trouble finding one that will run correctly. Guess I could spring the $99 for it, but that's less fun.

Good luck and by all means... HAVE FUN!
