This was pretty easy for me. Since I didn't rip the ifo, I went from vob files using subrip to a text file (.srt) using subrip. Then I used the vobsub textsub.vdf filter for virtualdub (load it in the video filters menu and open the srt file), then I encoded my video in divx5.03 using a vfapi created avi file for the frameserving. This is not as intricate and powerful as an avisynth method and such, but divx5.03 is awesome in two pass mode, and gets me a 1-cd rip for a 2-hour movie almost every time in good quality.
No problems at all, and subrip does automatic corrections for things like I/l confusions and replaces '' with " and such automatically for you if you click a button.
If you're a newbie check out this method, it requires almost no research and can be started and finished in an evening with no hassles in most cases I'm sure.
