Hi there! Well, I've just encoded Tron movie with its subtitles using DVobSub filter. I realized it produces a blocky look, which is completely different than the macroblocks.
I've searched the forum and found out this http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40842&highlight=dvobsub+quality but no answer.
I took the screenshots below using the same program and the same DivX Decoder Filter settings, of course. "With" means that the .idx and .rar files were in the same directory than the .avi file; "without" means I've moved those 2 files to another folder so that the DVobSub arrow was not loaded in the tray. The effect was also the same even selecting the "Hide Subtitles" option on DVobSub. I have also disabled the overlay to take these screen, but that didn't change the results.
I haven't noticed this effect on the filmed parts of the movie. I mean, I could only see it now on Tron's virtual space sequences. On normal filmed parts I could not tell the difference, really. So, to be honest, I won't stop using DVobSub just because of this but I just thought you might know it. ;)

Note on Screen 1 around the round objects, mainly those closer to the screen on the lower left and right of the image. On Screen 2 you can see the effect around the border of his helmet and around his eyes. On Screen 3 you can see it on the round edges of the tank.
If you get an error message when trying to view the images please try again. That means my server has reached the max bandwidth reserved for me. Wait some secs and reload it.
Thank you!
