View Full Version : Can't rip, period..stops after AVS
MDesigner
3rd April 2003, 07:45
I've tried twice now to rip this. I bought it brand new so it's not a glitch in the DVD or anything.
It gets as far as AVIsynth and then after that, it just stops and sits there. Below are the log and my settings.
Thanks!
EDIT: This thread used to be called "can't rip Count of Monte Cristo" but then I realized I can't rip ANYthing. This is with CCE 2.5. TMPGEnc used to work just fine.. the only reason I switched is because TMPGEnc's CQ mode would never get me predictable file sizes. Should I just switch back to TMPGEnc and use 2pass VBR?

Did you rip with DVD2SVCD?
What version of CCE are you using?
Can you play the avs file in media player?
Mark
MDesigner
4th April 2003, 01:27
Yes, ripped with DVD2SVCD. CCE 2.50.01.
As far as the AVS file, I'm not sure what it's supposed to be called. What am I looking for? The biggest file besides the actual VOB files is the encoded audio.
markrb

.avs
Just open it in media player. It is not directly supported so you will have to tell Windows to use media player to open it.

Cool, Mark..nice trick. Not sure where it's pulling that video from since it's just a script file and it doesn't seem to include any references to large files. But oh well. :)
It plays, it's rather choppy. I can see the seconds ticking normally in WMP so it's not lagging the machine. Just the playback is choppy.
What should I try at this point?
PS: Thanks for helping me out on this one, I appreciate it.

I would suggest you turn off subs and anything else different from a plain Jane encode. Turn off CD images also. Then just do a chapter for a test. If the encode completes then you can start adding stuff back until you find what is causing your problem. Just plain old linear regression methods. I think that would help Mark help you. Also, before starting the encode, select preview in the "go" button. Do you see a pic or a red on black error line?
Also, just for curiosity, you didn't install another version of avisynth did you? If you put the just the word VERSION and save it in notepad as version.avs (Make sure to not save as version.avs.txt) and play in wmp what do you see?
MDesigner
8th April 2003, 07:23
Actually I can't open the version.avs file in WMP. It says it can't play the file. Yet it opens the main AviSynth.avs file just fine and plays it. Odd.

If WMP can't play the version.avs, use virtualdub.

Try using mpeg2dec2.dll in the frameserver tab and use safemode in the encoder tab. These 2 usually fix my crashing problems.
MDesigner
12th April 2003, 03:37
I don't have mpeg2dec2.dll. I have just mpeg2dec.dll and a couple other dlls. Is this of any significance? Should I have mpeg2dec2.dll somewhere?
Also, if I turn on safemode, what impliciations will this have? Will there be any significant change in the video quality or encoding time?
Thanks for your help!

Hm, dead topic? Maybe I should just give up on this one.. maybe it's not possible to convert this DVD?

Hello:
In the Frameserver tab, click on the ellipsis (...) that resides at the end of the MPEG2Dec line, this should open up something for you. Another quick run through the guide will tell you all about safe mode, a search will turn up a ton of info too.
Happy Easter,

I can't help you with this, but heres a thought........Have you tried Ddogg's suggestions? If so, you might offer some feedback, it would give the guys that are "in the know" something more to work with.

Yeah I tried Ddogg's suggestions. Turned anything "extra" off, it still didn't work. I'm also unable to determine which version of AVISynth I have.
I think CCE is the culprit.. I could try using TMPGEnc.
Do a complete uninstall of dvd2svcd and avisynth. Do a search for all versions of avisynth.dll in windows explorer and delete them all. Reinstall latest full version of dvd2svcd (it will install avisynth - select avisynth 2.5)
Then, try another dvd as source on a basic one pass cbr CCE encode. Select no images in cd image tab, no subs, only one audio track. Let us know.

The only prob I have now is, at the very beginning of each SVCD, the sound jitters a bit. But that stops after just a brief second. Not a huge issue, since I usually rip subs too, so I miss something said, I can read it. Any idea what causes this?
Thanks again for helping me solve my problem!
