Is it possible to rip a double sided DVD to the hard drive and then use DVD2one to encode and fit on one DVD-r?

this is a actually a good question b/c i have a 3 DVD set that i am currently making (it's the 2003 Fiesta Bowl) and i would like to maybe be able to put all 3 discs onto one DVD...sorta the same concept as above.

i realize the quality loss could potentially be tremendous, but i would like to at least test this out on a DVD+RW or something.

thanks...sturmie

*EDIT*
how badly would the menus be screwed up if each of the 3 discs had its own structure? just curious.

sturmie, sounds like you're looking for the tool I was looking for in another thread. A way to "resize" mpeg files.

DVD2One can work if you author to a title set and run DVD2One on that.

Yes, it is possible with the aid of IfoEdit. but only for the main movie, no menus, no extras. This is how it can be done:

Rip the .VOB files (VTS_xx_1.VOB .. VTS_xx_n.VOB) of the main Movie from the first side of the DVD to your HD. If their names aren't VTS_01_x.VOB, rename them accordingly.
Rip the .VOB files (VTS_xx_1.VOB .. VTS_xx_n.VOB) of the main Movie from the first side of the DVD to your HD in another directory. Now rename the to VTS_01_n+1.VOB .. VTS_01_n+m.VOB and move them into the directory with the .VOBs from the first side. You now have VTS_01_1.VOB .. VTS_01_n+m.VOB in one directory.
Launch IfoEdit and press the "Create IFOs" button, select VTS_01_1.VOB, single PGC and chapter for each cell.
You can now compress the entire Movie with DVD2One, InstantCopy or dvd95copy by selecting the newly created VIDEO_TS.IFO

Check the resulting movie with a software player before you burn it. This (rather simple) scheme does not take care for multiple PGCs and other advanced features. But it should work for most Flippers.

thanks schlaufer....all my DVDs are pretty simple that i create personally....the fiesta bowl disc1 for example is 4 MPEGs (mpegs taken from the ReplayTV and run through Womble) w/ defined chapter break points and thumbnails....discs 2 and 3 will be the same....nothing real special. i prolly will only attempt to compress all 3 discs to one, b/c w/ sports MPEGs, u really need the highest quality possible to really see the action clearly.

thanks for the info....sturmie

schlaufer:

i followed your procedure to do "Time to Kill" and it didnt work. Side 2 always plyed before Side 1. This is because of Vob ID related issues. I used vobedit to join the side 2 vobs with a Vob ID 1 greater than the last vob id on side 1. Now it worked perfectly.

Derrow has a super guide on doing this. checkout http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/Derrow/joinclip.html

its US$5 to get a login but it is worth every penny

Sturmie, ReplayTV extractions are the exact reason I started that other thread.... I know there are lots of us who could use a tool that just transcodes mpeg files to a smaller size.

Not to hijack the thread, but what quality mode was the recoding done at and on what replay model? 5K models will go above the DVD spec for bitrates, peaking above 13mbps so you may have problems with authoring and or playback.

It would be best to transcode the mpegs before authoring.
