I have recently since the release of the beta code to allow legacy access in VDub, encoding some anime that I recently noticed that had bad luma problems. This appears in all DivX based codecs when trying to compress dark blue.

Then I encode with WMV9 and theres less luma blocking if I encode at 80 quality (file size is also 1/2 of same quality of DivX 5)
If i encode Kamyla 1 or 2 (they have police women that wear blue suits that macroblock bad, even at drf 2 in DivX) at 95% quality, its better looking than quant 2 DivX.

It does seem to have a weakness for high motion though. DivX seems to compress high motion better due to B frame support.

DivX 5.02 Encoded frame DRF 2 ~ Bit rate 1350kbps

WMV 9 Encoded frame 95 Quality ~ 900 kbps

If its one thing WMV compresses very well its low motion.

I actually did a test on WMV9 for Anime. Since you have started the topic i will post abit of results..

On Low bitrate. Max bitrate 500. And averge bitrate 300.

RV9 produce a file which is 80% smaller in file size and archieve a similar quality.

So i will say RV9 is still the king of Anime at this bitrate......

Hi

I compressed the TV serie Vampire Princess Miyu, in 640x480, from a DVD RIP in XviD @ 1500kbps with AC3.

My settings was: 350kbps (including 32kbps sound).

The quality was nearly the original, and the filesize went from 240 MB to 60 MB.

RV9 is the king.
