I've followed Trilight's Uberguide and until now everything has run smoothly, but when i try to import the subtitles like he instructs me to do, Scenarist comes with the following errors:

Info Checking Subtitle File. Stream ID = 1, File = (H:\TRAININGDAY\dif4u\VTS01\subs\VTS_01_VSUB_P1-00-English.sst)
Error The subtitle start timecode should be bigger than background video start.
Error The subtitle start timecode should be bigger than background video start.
Error The subtitle start timecode should be bigger than background video start.
Error The subtitle start timecode should be bigger than background video start.
Error The subtitle start timecode should be bigger than background video start.
Error The subtitle start timecode... (continues with 105 lines in total of the "The subtitle start timecode etc."-error for each language i try to import)

I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong here. I've tried searching for a similar problem, i got a hit but it didn't help me :( (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=43230

All help is appreciated.

Edit the subtitle file made by subrip with a text editor and look at the timing of the last at the end.
You will probably see for example: start time 01:10:25:00
end time: 00:00:00:00

Try changing the value end time with a more logical one. Hope that helps !

I think yes, because the start time is smaler than the end time, but my subriping files usualy end like this:

Color (4 4 4 4)
Contrast (0 0 0 0)
1131 01:28:25:09 01:28:25:40 file_name.1131.bmp

PS. I always do my subs with SubRip

Sorry but can't help you.
Do a search through the authoring forums at doom9 and at www.vcdhelp.com.
Nevertheless if you find the answer post it here because i'm also curious.

Cheers !

@ redeemer-dk

In your case the scenarist error has nothing to do with a not working script file. When importing a video file, you can't say, what starting time code scenarist will use for it. Normally it should be 00:00:00,00. Sometimes Scenarist gives the video a starting timecode like 01:00:00,00 or 00:59:59,00 or something like that. So the subtitle start times don't go coherent with the start time of the video you use it for.

There are two solutions for that problem:

1. Look in the track editor on your video track and check, what starting time code it has. Write it down, then rip your subs again with Subrip but change the starting timecode of the subs before ripping (where you can select which VOBs and which sub tracks to use). Where it says 00:00:00,00. Change that to the start time you wrote down before. Then you should be able to import the subs correctly.

2. Export your scenarist project (before you've imported the subs! if you have already delete the sub tracks!) to a script. Open the exported script with notepad and change all video start times (for data and for track editor items!) to 00:00:00,00.

I think, the first solution will work best for you. :)

Thanks Crazyjoe! I exported my script and changed all video start times to 00:00:00;00 instead of 01:00:00;00 and changed all the chapter times to go one hour back (instead of 02:34:22;02 i changed it to 01:34:22;02) and now it works! When i import the script i get some warnings like this:

Warning This Video [ H:\TRAININGDAY\dif4u\VTS01\VTS__01_P01.4~3_1-2.M2V ] has different duration.

But i hope it doesen't matter... (BTW is it me or does that warning not give any sense? different from what?)

Thanks again :)

It shouldn't matter. When you delete the video information files scenarist creates after scanning an imported video before you create a new project of your corrected script, the error should disappear. :)

I have a slightly different problem that might be connected, since it at first gave me that same error, then i set a 01:00:00:00 delay to the subtitles, and I get this new error.

Info ********* Error *********
Info Checking Subtitle File. Stream ID = 1, File = (F:\UTENA\scen.subs\utena.sst)
Error The display area height should be smaller or equal to 479
Error The display area does not match the pixel area.
Error The display area (Y2) should be smaller than 479.
Error Dimensions dump:
DisplayArea: X1=0, Y1=2, X2=719, Y2=480
PixelArea: Top=2, Bottom=477
SubTitleImage: Width=720, Height=478

Now the bitmaps are actually 720 by 480, I don't know why its reporting it as not. But why won't it accept them?

There is an error in the script file. Change the Y2 Value in the Display Area section to the 479 that Scenarist wishes and try it again. Tell me if the error still occurs. :)

I changed it so this is what it started out as:

st_format 2
Display_Start non_forced
TV_Type PAL
Tape_Type NON_DROP
Pixel_Area (2 576)
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
Color (9 3 4 3)
Contrast (15 15 15 0)
E2 (0 0 255 ===)
E1 (255 0 0 ===)
PA (0 0 0 ===)
BG (255 255 255 ===)
Directory .

But same error

You didn't say, that your subs are for PAL. They should have a resolution of 720x576. In the Pixel Area section there should be 574 instead of 576 and in the Display Area section 574 instead of 479.

Edit: never mind, I got it to get past that error, but I'm getting that timecode error again.

Error The start time should be smaller than end_time. [01:51:39:29 - 01:51:39:29]
Error The start time should be smaller than end_time. [01:51:39:29 - 01:51:39:29]

The wierd thing is I have no subtitles at that time, start or end. So I don't know what I am supposed to fix.

Thanks.

No one? Can't make an anime without subtitles, whereas a regular movie can go fine without them. :(

Try this :

Choose your track in th Track Editor. On the right side, click on the video. Look in the "Property Browser" (menu View / Property Browser to see which one it is). Look at the value "Start Time To Video".

Open your SST file in Notepad. Look the list of BMP files. The second column is "START". If there is a time here that is smaller than the value of "Start Time To Video" noted before, you will get an error cause the subtitle script is telling Scenarist to show a subtitle before the start time of the video !

For example, when enconding with CCE, it will by default put a timecode of "01:00:00;00". If your subtitles begins at "00:00:05;00", you'll get an error !

Solution :
In notepad, do a search/replace of " 00:" (note the blank space at the beginning) to " 01:" (note the blank space at the beginning) and try to import again.

Hope it helps. Or learn Japan :D !

I figured out which line was giving me beef by one by one trying to import subtitle files with parts cut out. I would delete everything past 350 lines, if it accepts it, delete everything past 400 lines. It turned out there was one line that was wierd, even though there's no apparant reason why it did that.

Well, seems to work now.
