The following http://drebel.topcities.com/xvid_op...ned(Drebel).doc recently submitted by drebel in another thread could be useful for you.

i understand perfectly, still you'll never find such a guide: video compressio is complex from the root, if you run for highcompression you must use case specific settings; what's more xvid is for testing purpose only that means you're expected to test it.
if you don't want to bother with that disable all the option you don't understand and run for 2 or 3 cd instead 1
ah, not to mention, rips better than dvd? filter using, i bet, that's lot more complicated ;)

As far as I'm concerned, I can't see how the rip can be better than the DVD source... OK, it can be less noisy (by filtering, even if noise usually is part of the movie), but better ? What do you mean exactly ?
Nevertheless, I completely agree with Blueseb:
1) If you're tired with experiment, don't use UNSTABLE builds: the new features may vary a lot between two releases. Whatever, you'll never have surprises with the STABLE ones.
2) If you think the quality of the XviD you saw was better than what you can do, maybe it's not because of DivX but of the filters used (C3D, IDTC, sharpen, smooth, etc - not a filter :)). Then you should try to find some guides about filtering and... experiment. This is he point when trying to optimize your video work: you have to try, again and again, and read. My point is: everybody can make some great rips, on 2 or 3 CDs, the difficulty comes when reducing bitrate.
3) There are no rules like the ones you're looking for: "< 100 min ,1cd = xx , xxx ,xxx , filter .. parameters". It REALLY depends on the movie you're processing; some will be easy to put on one CD with DVD-quality (such as Panic Room, Avalon, for example) some others not.
Finally, a personnal tip (for what it worthes):
4) Do not use Lanczos Resize for extreme rips (I mean: more than 120 min on 1 CD, two languages for example). Lanczos makes you loose lots of compressibility, and you should (IMHO) reserve it for more confortable encodes. Maybe this explain why you complain about the quality you achieve ? Just an idea...

Could someone please explain, how on earth would it be even theoretically possible to create 1cd rip which would be better or equal to DVD (not h264)???

Could someone please explain, how on earth would it be even theoretically possible to create 1cd rip which would be better or equal to DVD (not h264)???Technically it's impossible, because the very encoding process destroys information. However, quality is very very subjective (that's why it hardly means anything when someone says something looks great) so something can still look equal to DVD quality. And getting rid of some noise can make a rip look better than DVD, but it's all a matter of how you define "better quality".
That's the sport of encoding, to make something look just as good as DVD, even though it isn't, and fit it on only 1 or 2 CD's.
