View Full Version : Not getting good results with Divx5.03

I just made the leap from Divx4.12 to Divx5.03 . I make 60 - 90 sec sales training clips from dv. I was hoping to cut my file size down to ~ 6mb per minute while maintaining good quality.

With Divx4.12 I was using a bitrate between 1100 and 1300 depending on the motion of the source. My files sizes ranged from 9-10.5mb per minute. I have tried so far with Divx5.03 1000 and 1300. The 1300 clip is excellent but the file size is a little high. The 1000 bitrate clip is not at up to the quality I need.

I use the following div5 settings with vdub.

Multipass npass
Crop 8 left 8 right
Bicubic normal resize 640x480
enabled Bi-directional Encoding

Everything else set to defaults.

I have tried using psycho visuals. I didn't notice any difference.

As far as audio: what would be the a good setting? Mp3 or Mpeg layer3? What is the minimum bitrate + freq?

What I am doing wrong?

I don't have this quality problem, but for the ausio I use OggVorbis which sounds good at 80kbits (for movies).

Why DivX 5.03 and not 5.0 or 5.02? I prefer the other two over 5.03. They have Quantizer settings.

If you search this forum, you can find any number of 5.03 threads, listing settings, experiences, recommendations. And, suprisingly, not all the recommendatains are to remove it and install 5.02. :D

(Based on others' experiences with it, I did not bother to "upgrade" from 5.02.)

640x480 is too much for the bitrate you're using.
Resize down to 512x384 for example.

MP3 and MPEG LAYER 3 are the same ¬.¬

Minimum bitrate for stereo audio is 112kbps to get acceptable quality.

b-frames is your problem right there. There's a serious bug in 5.0.3. Just turn it off and try again.

yeah i got huge files with 5.03 and there were load of bugs (including postprocessing ones) my recomemded solution is to wait for these to be flattened out, hopefully, in 5.04 or u can allways fell back on 5.02 that workes fine to me.

ask for audio try 128 abr that as low as i will go or maybe 128 vbr depending on your choise.

I use 128(abr) for 1 cd rips, and 160(abr) 2cd rips, anything below that and youl get bad distortion and "elec effects"

BTW u said freq, did u mean the "sample rate"?
i dont mess with that as it gives bad synk, and i know it would sound as good with 21k rather than 41k~48k.(i have poor hearing if any one askes why i like 21k :p)

You guys are great but you are confusing me ;) Now you say leave b-frames unchecked? I first posted a thread in the divx 4 forum complaining of subpar results and that is when someone suggested I upgrade to divx 5 due to the advantages of b-frames.

So switch it off or switch to 5.02? As for audio, what is the least bitrate to use for mono? Stereo is not an issue.

Drop down to 512x384? That sounds fine.

Thanks all.

Well in my opinion you can go down to 96kbps if you use Ogg instead of MP3 and it will remain stereo. :D
